i recently update from ios 4.3.3 to ios 5.0.1. i did it because i like the new iMessage, iCloud and screen notifcations. but i also wanted to wait for the untethered JB. prior to the untethered JB, i didnt want upgrade. also, dont forget to preserve your baseband if you decide to upgrade to 5.0.1. even if your not interested in being able to unluck, i would preserve the baseband in case you decide to sell as unlockable baseband have more resale value.
1.59.00 4.0/4.0.1/4.0.2 Yes (Ultrasn0w)
2.10.04 4.1 Gevey Sim
3.10.01 4.2.1 Gevey Sim
4.10.01 4.3.X Gevey Sim

It should be OK to upgrade and rejailbreak, but you should take precautions if you're unlocked.
iOS 5 is pretty cool - I like the added features to the App Store, and iCloud. Safari seems a little snappier, too. Not all jailbreak apps are 100% compatible, though. FolderEnhancer just fixed a major bug in its software, and Multiflow will crash apps in the background on occasion. As time goes by all the wrinkles will be ironed out, though.

If your iphone is legally unlocked, then you don't need to preserve your baseband anymore.

If the carrier unlocked it then it should be unlocked forever. So preserving baseband is not needed as it should forever be unlocked. If 5.1 was to drop tomorrow then you would have less than a day to update to 5.0.1 to have a jailbreak. shortly after 5.1 drops then they will no longer allow you to update to 5.0.1 because apple will stop signing it.
So best to get it out of the way now incase you have to do some restores if issues arise.

There should be no need to preserve baseband if you are legally unlocked. If the carrier did it then you are basically factory unlocked for good. So baseband will never matter anymroe.
I always update to the firmware then jailbreak after. I used redsnow this round and have no issues.

If you are sure your provider has unlocked it for you then do a restore to 5.0.1, amswer the welcome wizard and plug your iphone into itunes, a message pops up saying your iphone is factory unlocked
Use Redsn0w 0.9.10b3 to jailbreak at 5.0.1.

You can use any jailbreak. For example if you used sn0wbreeze on 4.1 then you can use redsn0w on 5.0.1 with no issues.

I was trying upgraded my iphone 4 from 4.2.1 to 5.0.1. I first preserved the BB using redsn0w 0.9.10b3[As I use Gevey sim]. Switched to Pwned DFU mode to install the custom Firmware. The process completed with ERROR 14. The phone got stuck in Connect to itunes page. I used to redsn0w to exit recovery

Apptrackr is piracy. Please don't discuss it or give info on how to illegally install apps.
