I would downgrade to 4.1 and jailbreak with redsnow 0.9.6 b6 and this is the best for 3G iphone.

I know 100% redsnow works at 4.1 , why don't you restore to custom firmware created by snowbreeze 2.1 or PT 4.1.3

The last ditch is to jailbreak from a pc to see if it resolves your issue.
