help, updating to 5.0.1
hi,
i would like some guidance as the best way to update to 5.0.1
current BB is 01.59.00 (i read everywhere that i should preserve it but how do i do this?)
current firmware is 4.2.1
Would like
same baseband
firmware 5.0.1
jailbroken
unlocked (i dont have original sim)
i've read a lot of guides already- the one which i want to follow is Jailbreak 5.0.1 Untethered - iPhone 4, 3GS, iPod Touch 4G, 3G, iPad with Redsn0w 0.9.10 b1 [Tutroial] - Jailbreak 5.1 / 5.0.1 / 5 / 4.3.5 / 4.3.2 / 4.3.3 / 4.3.4 Untethered - iPad 2 Jailbreak but i don't get the dot point that says "make sure you only get to 5.0.1 via a custom IPSW!" does that mean something like this... http://*************/topic/169900-do...-instructions/ (the hacktivated one)?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

You should backup your iphone to Itunes before starting so that you can recover your settings, files, apps etc after the steps below
Your going to:
1) download the latest version of Redsnow (9.10b3) and stock IOS 5.0.1 firmware.
2) Launch Redsnow, select extras and create a custom IOS firmware, preserving baseband
3) then select enter DFU mode
4) restore via Itunes (making sure you select the custom firmware you created, not the stock version)
5) activate via Itunes;
6) return to Redsnow and jailbreak, installing Cydia
7) Since you are lucky to have a bb 1.59, you can software unlock by installing ultrasnow from cydia
You might also look at Pwnage tool which can create a custom firmware that is jaibroken and activated
Good Luck
Hope that helps

Everything above is correct but u need to be in pWned DFU mode, in redsn0w extras section before u can install custom ipsw. Keep in mind u will need the original carrier sim to activate in iTunes if u restore. The sim doesn't need to be working or associated to a contract/number, it just needs to search for the signal with a correct carriers sim to activate after u restore. I've heard of hacktivating but never done it, here in Canada I just bought blank sim cards for every carrier that has iPhones for $5 each, this way I can activate any iPhone after a restore.
