Tethered ios 5 to ios 5.01
Currently I have my ipod touch 4g on tethered ios 5 and saw that an untethered ios 5.01 was released recently. So of course I want the latest version.
From what I've gathered you have to upgrade to ios 5.01 in itunes before anything else, but when I go to update it results in a timeout error.
What should/can I do?

It sounds like u have the update server blocked with tinyumbrella try a different computer or take the block on your host file off then when it's done and rebooting plug it into the computer with the backup in iTunes on it
Host file on Mac :
Open Terminal and type
sudo pico /private/etc/hosts
Enter your password and it's at the bottom delete the lines that say apple then hit either Option + o or it's control + o or command + o, it will ask you if you want to over write it press enter, then press the same key(option/control/command) + X to exit
The controls are listed at the bottom of the terminal window
it might not be pico
Windows is the same process but idk the CMD line code

:-) Actually editing hosts file is lot easier

I don't think it's the problem here though . Did u check firewall?

Yes, I get that error in itunes.
No, there isn't an error code.
I have modified the host file (also have a host.umbrella that is the same), it looks like this:
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
#74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
#127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com
I did mess with TU a little, but don't know if I "blocked" something..
Does that mean I blocked apple? I'll delete the bottom lines and see if it helps.
Edit:
@xtacy
What do I do to my firewall? I use nod32 and I think I'm just using the default windows firewall.Last edited by ktothev; 01-02-2012 at 02:22 PM.

Your host file is fine. Try disabling antivirus and firewall nd try.

Like you said, the deleting the lines from the hosts file didn't do anything. Trying with disabled firewall and AV now.
Just tried with both disabled, didn't work.Last edited by ktothev; 01-02-2012 at 02:47 PM.

Just a heads up the The gs.apple.com is the server that checks to see if its the newest Firmware, u block this to downgrade
You said you get an iTunes error but no code... What exactly does it say?
Try a different computer?

While downloading the FW update, it just stops and says itunes network timed out. Something like that.
Does the # symbol block whatever is after it?
I have no other computers. I might be able to use a friends, but who knows when I'd be able to do that.

Go download iOS5.0.1 from an online site then shift restore to it
-

Can I use the same file and shift + update it?
I tried doing the shift + restore and it led to serious headaches with all the 16xx and 3194 errors. Which led to me messing around with TU and the hosts file until I figured out that I could just use redsnow to "just boot" it. Which led me to where I am now.
Just tried shift + update and got error 1602.
Guess I'll try shift + restore again. Wish me luck.
When I shift + restore, should I have the gs.apple lines in the hosts file?
So I've tried shift + restore with and without ireb and with and without the lines in the hosts file. Nothing but 16xx and 3194 errors.
HELP?!Last edited by ktothev; 01-02-2012 at 04:56 PM.

Take it out of the host file and go to
And download the correct Firmware then Shift Restore to it
felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/
3194 Error:You should end up with an error and it telling you to restore in iTunes IGNORE THAT, close iTunes(quit) open TinyUmbrella and click Exit Recovery let it boot and you should be okay

Did some experimenting and got 1601/1602 without the lines in host, and finally got 3194 with #74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com.
So I closed itunes and opened up TU and the only option was "fix recovery".
So uhh, I guess I'm stuck again?Last edited by ktothev; 01-02-2012 at 08:36 PM.

The # in front is like commenting out that line of code
There should be an option still in RedSn0w to hit Just Boot to kick it awake from that error code of 3194 if not go get RecBoot

3194 means apple is not signing it anymore. Exit recovery fix recovery won't work .
Do this:
1) open host file. Remove anything that has gs.apple.com
2) go to iTunes . Shift restore.
3) use redsn0w 0.9.10b3 to jb.
I don't understand why people complicate simple things by some wrong advices.

Tried a custom fw yet? If not, try it! Or...
I did a few upgrades to 5.0.1 on 4 devices this past week and I did run into trouble on all save for the iPT 4g. But anyhow, if stock fw is used I would download it via iTunes. Then locate the ipsw, move it to my desktop, then shift+restore to it. That allowed me to restore/upgrade to 5.0.1 (stock) without errors.
Ensure in TU under advanced options that the "point to cydia on exit" option is disabled and your host files are set to normal (to point to Apple's server).
