Updated software...still unlocked, but no longer jailbroken?
I was given a jailbroken/unlocked iPhone 2g from a friend and I stupidly updated the software before learning anything about how these work. After doing it, the old apps are gone (including Cydia), but the phone still works just fine for T-Mobile, which is a surprise. So, it's obviously still unlocked, but is it still jailbroken? I'd like to get Cydia again so I can MMS. So, (1) is it still jailbroken, (2) if so, how do I get Cydia back on there, (3) or if it's not still jailbroken, do I risk the unlock by re-jailbreaking it?
Or, is there anyway to get MMS without re-jailbreaking?
If it's any help, the phone was backed up on my PC (the backup that happens before a sync) before I updated the software on my Mac. Might there be something still on my PC that could make this easier? Thanks so much for any help.

Just jailbreak it again using the correct jailbreak for that firmware (google it). Jailbreaking won't affect your unlock, only upgrading firmware will. But if you already upgraded and T-mobile is still working, I only assume it is a factory unlocked device so u never have to worry about it. (just ask your friend who gave it to you if it's factory unlocked or not).

Thanks a ton. I'm pretty sure it's not factory unlocked...and she wouldn't know, otherwise. I've read lots of places that the 2g unlock is "permanent" because Apple doesn't really care anymore.
Follow up, though. I was going to use the instructions on iClarified for 3.1.3. Can I leave "unlock" and/or "already pwned" unchecked given that it's already been/still is unlocked and was already broken? Or is every break a clean break and I need to check those? Thanks a ton!

You should check Unlock, but for Pwned you have to know if your iPhone was actually Pwned. In others words, you have to know if the last exploiting tool was Pwnage Tool. If it was, check it. If you don't know, then I suggest not checking it. Not every restore is fully clean.
It is also not clear if it is unlocked. Maybe the iPhone was activated already with iTunes and you didn't know about it. Try switching SIM cards to be certain.

I'm new at this, but I'm thinking it's unlocked. Since it's a 2g, it was originally on AT&T and now I'm using it on T-Mobile. Unless "unlocked" means something different than I think it means...and I'm really not being sarcastic...if "unlocked" is different than "activated," that's new news to me. Doesn't unlocked mean working for a carrier that it wasn't designed to work for? Although I don't know the complete history of this phone, I'm 99% sure it was purchased for use with AT&T, then broken to use for T-Mobile. Thanks again...the help from the both of you has been awesome.

Your are welcome

Unlocked refers to a phone being able to use data and coverage across multiple carriers (and networks). Activated refers to a phone getting started to use on a carrier. For example, my iPhone 4S has been activated by Virgin Mobile (carrier is Bell, but network is Virgin), but it isn't unlocked. That means that I can't use different carriers, such as Rogers.
Unfortunately, we still don't know for sure if your iPhone 2G is unlocked. How about asking your friend what carrier he or she used before he or she gave it to you? That should help make the next step possible.

Ah, that makes much more sense. Maybe I don't need/want it unlocked, then? I know that the phone worked on AT&T originally (because that was all you could get back then) and she activated it for T-Mobile only (didn't use it on AT&T, just got the phone for the purpose of being able to use it on T-Mobile), and T-Mobile is the network I use, so we have the same carrier. So, if it's been activated on T-Mobile previously, is still currently, and that's what I want for the future, do I care about unlocking? I'm not sure I care about using it on a carrier other than T-Mobile (though I'm sure I'm confusing the terms carrier and network). The coverage is great everywhere I go in the US and I probably wouldn't ever take it abroad.
Will it stay activated on T-Mobile when I do the re-jailbreaking?
Thanks once again. Hopefully this clarifies everything and I can stop pestering everyone.

Cann you tell us what modem firmware (baseband) you have?
