How to preserve baseband??

I am confused. I have iphone 4 already jailbroke and unlocked, currently running 4.01, firmware 01.59.00

I want to upgrade to 5.01 but want to remain unlocked and jailbroke and unthethered. I've read it's all possible. I can use windows or mac doesn't matter.

But from the directions it sounds like I need to first backup. Already done this.

Now what in order to save my baseband? Directions sounds like you update to os5 then use redsnow/sn0breeze to jailbreak/unlock and use a custom ipsw to restore. Is this right it sounds backwards to me.

Doesn't updating through itunes first automatically update my baseband?

also the entire making a custom ipsw is confusing. which one do I download to make do I get the 5.01 ipsw or do I go with an ipsw that goes with my current 4.o1 setup? I have all my shsh saved through cydia as well. sorry it's just been a long time since I've needed to jailbreak or unlock haven't needed to until os5 came out can't wait to use the new features and want to get ready to be able to use siri when that fix is done without needed your own server.

Yeah, don't just update!!...use latest sn0wbreeze or latest redsn0w... In snow breeze just launch and use preserve baseband mode on top...u have to download stock iOS 5.0.1 IPSW and point to it to create custom IPSW in sn0wbreeze...once sn0wnreeze done creating file, launch redsm0w to put in pwnd DFU mode and them launch iTunes, press shift they holding down shift click restore, browse to select the snow breeze named IPSW file created on desktop ...let iTunes do it's thing..

That's while holding down shift key click restore...

Make sure u have everything backed up and off the phone somewhere...drag all pics n vids out of camera roll...also make sure u do iTunes backup...(I don't use iTunes backup but doesn't hurt to have)...I sync contact n calendar with outlook..you also need at least iTunes 10.5 so update that also..

Now...I don't unlock..so u need to look at that solution first!...I think ultrasnow was updated but u need to look into that first..

Ok...so once u have custom 5.0.1 loaded launch redsn0w again. Make sure u change properties on the exe to run in xp sp2 compatibility mode and run as administrator..there r instructions out there..google them..
