iPhone not working with laptop

When I plug my jailbroken iPhone 4 into a laptop nothing happens,like it's not even plugged. I tried other phones and they work great,so it's not the cable or laptop. I was trying to upgrade to 5.0.1 for the untethered jailbreak. Since nothing happens I can't even restore let alone update. I Googled a few things but nothing seemed to work because the iPhone does nothing,doesn't charge or bring up iTunes or noticed at all,like it's not plugged in. I seem to remember having this problem with my old 3G once

It also charges fine through car and wall chargers

I also discovered that if the phone is off when I plug it into the computer it comes on,but nothing after that.
