you don't need both. you can either use snowbreeze to preserve BB when upgrading on windows, or you can use redsnow/pwnage tool to preserve if you have a mac.

this is basically what i done and it didnt work but might for you.
the reason i dont this is because snowbreeze allows me to hacktivate.
i used snowbreeze to create a hacktivated jailbroken ipsw, then custom restored it via itunes. had cydia, got ultrasnow, had great signal after installing that. searched corona and installed it, rebooted, and it wouldnt work. well it worked the first time, but anytime after that it would just stay stuck at the white apple until i booted tethered using redsnow.
but try it, it may work for you.

my plan is to preserve BB using snobreeze, update via iTunes then JB via redsnow. Sound like a plan to me.....but what the hell do i know.

Yes you are fine to jailbreak, jailbreaking is just ADDING Cydia to your current device. Nothing is deleted or changed except Cydia being added. If you already preserved your base band then you're safe now. By the way, you could have just used redsn0w to preserved your base band under "Extras" -> "Custom IPSW". I used redsn0w to create a custom firmware, enter PWNED DFU mode, and jailbreak. Lol.

What about hacktivation, i don't think redsnow does this. I tried to jailbreak using redsnow with that stupid activation thing and it didn't work, I had to use limera1in to jailbreak PAST the activation deal. Not stolen phone, just got it while I was abroad. Can I make a custom ISPW with hacktivation built in? Thanks

Oh I see, I didn't know redsn0w didn't have hacktivation built it... well I had an AT&T sim card laying around so I just popped it in and it let me past my lock screen. I usually use sn0wbreeze to let me hacktivate through the lock screen alongside with a preserved base band.

I keep reading that redsn0w does hacktivate, maybe it did in previous versions, not sure. what I got is a locked iphone 4, with original firmware running 4.0 Backed up blobs via ifaith. Kept getting 1600 error when trying to load custom ISPW, then I tried on laptop with old itunes, It crashed half way through, had to restore back to 4.0 But then had to deal with activation screen. tried jailbreaking 4,0 with redsn0w, but it came up with no plisk error or something limerain jailbroke it, then used ultrasnow for quick unlock PHEW. But i want 5.01. I dunno what to do.

I see. I heard people kept getting 1600 error from your host files or something or something with tinyumbrella. Anyways, where ever you are right now. You should just cook up a custom firmware through redsn0w / sn0wbreeze and then jailbreak it via redsn0w and you should be good to go.

I could see how that could mess something up.
Well, for what its worth, these are the exact steps i took to preserve BB and JB
1. How To Jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 On Windows Using Sn0wbreeze 2.8b11 [Guide] | Redmond Pie
2. iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your iPhone Without Updating the Baseband (Windows) [5.0.1]
then go back into redsnow to JB
It is the long way but it worked for me the first time.

as long as your are using snowbreeze or pwnagetool you are fine with basebands because the 2 programs will never ever in your life update your baseband. UNLESS you check "update baseband" when you create a custom fw lol
Keep this in mind..:
Never use a official fw to restore or update if you want to preserve baseband, always use a custom firmware made from either of the 2 programs i mentioned above.
