Hey guys this is my first post so 'hello' I hope this isn't rude and hasn't been covered before, but I've searched quite a bit over the internet and am unsure of how to proceed due to not really understanding all the terms.

The iPhone is currently jailbroken and unlocked on ios 4.0.1 - it was a bit of a nightmare doing that ages ago as once I upgraded the ios I didn't have the original sim (purchased already unlocked), so had to get a phonebook sim to be able to reach Cydia and unlock.

What's the current situation, if I was to upgrade the 3Gs from 4.0.1 to 5.0.1 is there a way I can unlock/activate the phone without the original sim card as I don't want to get stuck again on the iTunes screen with the message asking for the original sim?

Sorry, im sure this has been covered many times, but if someone can point me in the right direction I would be really grateful.
