I've just discovered that my 3GS, which `I only use as a spare now, is the old bootrom. Least I think it is, it has [iBoot-359.3] at the end of the serial when looked at in System Profiler. Does this make any difference to it's value? It's a 32g model.
I ask because I recently picked up another 3GS, soley to try out iOS5 on. Now I've played with iOS5 I can sell one of them. If an old bootrom 3GS is more valuable obviously I'll be selling that one.
Of course, I might be mistaken, the 32gb model with the [iBoot-359.3] at the end might not be old bootrom at all, in which case I'm sure someone will tell me soon ;-)
Untethered you say? Hmmm. So how would i go about doing that?
I've upgraded the other 3gs I got to try iOS5 on, and have it JB's tethered, but how would I do it on the old bootrom model?
I'd also need to preserve the bandband to unlock it. Previously for all this sort of thing I've used Pwnagetool, but I can't seem to find it for iOS5. Is it out there? If not, what else builds custom firmwares without touching the BB?
You need to get to a pc and use snowbreeze 2.8b11 to create a custom firmware of 5.0, not 5.0.1. You don't need any aptcket verification.
Restore to this cfw of 5.0 created by snowbreeze.
Note : you cannot use redsn0w to create a No bb update cfw of 5.0 as this is not a jailbroken cfw.
I come out in a rash if I go near a Windows machine ;-)
Coming at this from another angle...
I can easily enough get the 3GS old bootrom unlocked, will only cost me £15, then I'm thinking I can just upgrade it to 5.0.1 and use the present Redsn0w to JB it, in much the same way as I did with the 3GS I picked up the other day to try out iOS5.
If I go this route, will Redsnow know the old bootrom 3GS can be JB'd untethered and so jailbreak it accordingly?
I gave in and fired up a windows machine. My plan was/is to create the custom firware, bring it over to my Mac, then restore via iTunes. Snowbreeze has done it's thing creating it, but I can find it saved anywhere on the Windows machine.
