Want to upgrade iOS on my 3gs; currently running 3.1.3 and spirit jailbreak

I would like to upgrade my iOS because some apps are unable to run on 3.1.3. I jailbroke with Spirit jailbreak.
I believe my SHSH are saved on Cydia. It shows 3.1.3, 4.0, 4.0.2, 4.0.2, 4.1, 4.2.1r1
I would then like to jailbreak with the new iOS.
Is it possible to do? And if so what are the steps?

Ok i could be wrong, but what you should do, is go and update to 4.1 or 4.2.1 and jailbreak with redsn0w or greenpois0n...

then you will update to 5.0.1... i never really knew much about the 3GS on 3.1.3, but if i remember correctly, there was something that happened..... also you might want to go to iH8sn0ws website and check if you have the new or old bootrom, that also makes a lot of difference!! so find that out first, and post back what you find

As mentioned above find out if it's a new bootrom or old bootrom first. If its a new bootrom you can go to any iOS you have shsh blobs for or 5.0.1 (which is current fw). If its an old bootrom you can go to any iOS from 3.0+ and they are all untethered jailbreaks for it too. Since your on 3.1.3 SAVE your baseband by using a custom firmware that will preserve your baseband. This is for future unlocking purposes and monetary gain if you ever want to sell it. A (old bootrom) 3GS with your baseband will fetch more $$ than one that has a non unlockable one. Let us know what you find out and we will go from there.

Then if ya go to 5.0 it will be untethered

Then make a CFW with sn0wbreeze and restore with that. If you need help, just let us know.

Download snowbreeze 2.8b11, download 5.0.1 ipsw and create a custom fw of 5.0.1
Choose expert mode under general whether to activate or not and build it
Use the pwned dfu mode of Snowbreeze to pwned dfu your iphone
Run itunes : shift + restore to cfw of 5.0.1
If new bootrom, do a just boot if white icon or frozen apple logo upon reboots.

If you don't need unlock, then restore to 5.0.1 and jailbreak it with redsn0w 0.9.9b8 but point to 5.0 ipsw.

I follow everything execpt when you tell me to point to 5.0 ipsw when I jailbreal with redsnow. Is that something it is going to ask when I run redsnow?

If you point to 5.0.1, redsn0w will say unrecognized firmware.

When I did shift restore in itunes i got an error that it could not restore the iphone with an error message 1600.
It seemed to load the software into itunes and then when it was ready to load it to the phone it crashed.
Any ideas what to do?

Are you restoring to custom fw or official fw ?

Put it in pwned dfu if you are loading the cfw.

I got it to restore. I must not have had it in pwned dfu.
Now I have a problem getting redsn0w to recognize 5.0 ipsw. I am going to downlaod it again and retry. I will post back

Actually I see cydia is already downloaded, so it must already be jailbroken. Is is still necessary to run redsn0w?
