    Default Error 14 ):

    Hi guys,

I'm really at my wits end with restoring my iPhone 4 (firmware version 4.3.3). I had wanted to restore my iPhone without updating and had followed the instructions within '[How-To] Using tiny umbrella to update/downgrade/restore', during which I encountered error 1013. I then followed what the instructions said and tried to restore with Snowbreeze by making my own custom firmware of 4.3.3. It was then that I encountered error 14. I tried a couple of times again but still the same error 14 popped up.

I'm using Windows XP ITunes 10.3.1.55. In a bout of exasperation, I've decided to restore and update as per the normal procedure. Is this wise? My Itunes is currently downloading the necessary software update as I write this. Should I cancel it as it will only make things worse?

Is there a chance for me to still resolve this error 14 and continue to jailbreak my phone? I will really appreciate any pearls of wisdom as I really don't know what to do.

Thanks in advance. (Please tell me any other information I need to include as I'm new. Sorry for my naivety.)

I initially used the USB port on the side of my laptop then switched to the back one and tried it once. It failed. Didn't restart my pc. Should I just be more persistent and keep doing it again?

And should I cancel the software update by Apple? Is it even possible to restore and update the normal way now?

What is your device ? Restore to the latest first to 5.0.1 and then downgrade later with proper steps.

Before I restored, my iPhone had been on firmware 4.3.3. I cancelled updates up until now. I've tried restoring multiple times using Snowbreeze using the USB port behind my laptop and it always fails at the start of the restoration process, i.e the degree of restoration doesn't vary with each try. So does that mean it might not be a USB cable or port problem? ):

Should I just let Apple try to update to 5.0.1 and go from there? Or is my Iphone really unsalvageable? ):

Are you using unlock ? Have you tried using Redsn0w 0.9.6 RC18 or 19 to put iphone into pwned dfu mode first prior to restoring to CFW of 4.3.3
There are possibilities, cfw is corrupted, using ireb to put into pwned dfu mode is not the best, make sure tss server is started for verification , etc.

Make sure you have the latest itunes installed, itunes 10.5 will allow you to downgrade if you have the blob.

Nope my phone doesn't need unlocking. I haven't tried using Redsnow. Could you tell me the steps I need to take in utlising both Redsnow and Snowbreeze to achieve the outcome you mentioned? I'm not too confident with the process.

I downloaded the actual firmware from iphonenerd.com (wondering if that might not be the best source...). Do you think I need to download a firmware somewhere else?

And what is it about the TSS server that I might have done incorrectly?

Sorry for asking. Just wanted to make sure I understood you correctly. (:

You need to download tiny umbrella and download the 4.3.3 shsh blob if you have it already saved in Cydia. You can see it under general.
If TU doesn't recognize your device ECID as you haven't used it , then you need to find out how to retrieve ECID and manually input it to download it so that you can start tss server for verification of 4.3.3. There is alot of work involved.

Do this first, easier way & forget about the top part as you don't need unlock
Do this restore to the latest 5.0.1 to get it up.
Download latest tiny Umbrella, plug iphone in > adv tab ? request shsh blob from cydia and click save shsh
Look under general to see what blobs you have before you proceed to downgrade.

I just tried restoring and updating to 5.0.1 by clicking restore on iTunes and letting it do its thing while my phone is under recovery mode (ie screen shows USB cable plugged to iTunes). Then after extracting software, and before it could start restore, an error 11 popped up!!! So it seems like I can't do it the normal way as well?

    What should I do now?

    Checklist :
Itunes to the latest or reinstall itunes again or use a different computer to try it out.
Hosts file not pointed to cydia server, you must let apple verify 5.0.1 restore.

And I thought I should clarify about what I did initially with Tinyumbrella. As mentioned above, I followed the instructions on Modmyi. I downloaded my firmware 4.3.3 and TinyUmbrella. I opened Tiny Umbrella and saved all my SHSHs from cydia, including 4.3.3 (both with 'Set Hosts to Cydia on Exit' checked and unchecked). Then I started TSS server with the Advanced options 'Save all available SHSH', 'Overwrite existing SHSH files on 'Save SHSH'' and 'When connective a device, prefer my custom device name...' checked and opened up iTunes. Then I pressed Shift+Restore and clicked on my ipsw file. In the middle of the restoration process, error 1013 came up.

With this error 1013, I then downloaded snowbreeze and tried to create my own custom ipsw. I got my phone into DFU mode and then opened up iTunes and clicked shift + restore again, this time clicking the custom ipsw. And then I got error 14.

So I just tried to update the normal way just now to 5.0.1 and instead now I get error 11.

This is the story so far....

Starting tss server with saved blob, you got that right.
You need a custom firmware of 4.3.3
Put iphone into pwned dfu mode, not a normal dfu mode
Run itunes and restore to cfw of 4.3.3 ( error 1013 will not pop up )

When I tried restoring+updating again on iTunes, I got the following error message: The iPhone cannot be restored at this time because the iPhone software update server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable. I then edited my host file based on what I read so that it became like this:

    127.0.0.1 localhost
    # 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
    # 127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com
(*The top is the only lines within the h
Now error 3194 pops up. Did I edit it incorrectly?

And answering your concerns iYeow, it was in pawned DFU mode when using Snowbreeze. When you said 'You need a custom firmware of 4.3.3', do you mean when using Snowbreeze or TinyUmbrella? I used the firmware I downloaded (is it called stock firmware?) when using TinyUmbrella and used a CUSTOM firmware when using Snowbreeze.

Once again, pardon my naivety. I'm really useless with computers.

You use a stock firmware to create a custom firmware.
You don't need to manually edit your hosts file, you can edit your hosts file to point or not to point to apple server under adv tab of Tiny Umbrella.
Once you have created a custom firmware.
Start your tss server, hosts file pointed to cydia.
    Pwned dfu your iphone
And restore to custom firmware of 4.3.3

How do I get it to point to Cydia? Is it by checking the 'Set Hosts to Cydia on Exit'?

This is what I've done so far:
    1. Reinstalled the newest version of iTunes.
    2. Downloaded and recreated another custom ispw file.
    3. Downloaded Redsnow to enter pwned DFU.
    4. Then started process of restoring again like what you said. Opened Tinyumbrella. Started TSS Server with my SHSH saved. Used Redsnow to enter pwned DFU mode. Opened up iTunes and Shift+Restrore with custom 4.3.3 ispw.
    5. The process went on with no errors as you said. But now my phone is showing an Emergency screen.

I read up that Emergency screen means that I didn't press Hactivate which means my phone is locked. But I'm quite sure my phone has never had that issue. I bought it from Maxis, a phone provider in Malaysia and have always switched between my Australian and Maxis sim cards without any issues. I've called Customer Service before and they said my iPhone isn't locked.

So how do I exit from this Emergency screen? Hopefully you have the answer!

Thanks for all the patience in guiding me so far. I've really appreciated all of it!

*Thought I'd also mention that when the Emergency Call screen appeared, it asked me to unlock my sim which was successful but still I'm on the Emergency screen.

OKAY! Managed to get my iphone back to the normal screen after replugging my USB and reopening my iTunes! Now my iTunes is being restored with my back-up.

THANKS VERY MUCH FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART iYeow! (:

Just last few questions. Seeing that I'm currently running on custom firmware, can you please list down what the implications are for me next time I need to restore and update my iPhone? For example, can I just restore and update my phone through iTunes like everybody else who has never jailbroken. Or must I from now on only use Tinyumbrella, Snowbreeze or custom firmwares to restore and update my phone? Sorry again for my ignorant questioning.

Your iphone bought from Maxis is factory unlocked . If your iphone is not jailbroken , you can do press update any time you want.
If you want to keep untethered jailbreak, then you cannot just update through iTunes as it erases all signs of jailbreak, you need to do the same tasks again.

Okay just to clarify the answers to a few scenarios that I think I'll meet in the future:
    1. Let's say 5.0.1 eventually has an untethered jailbreak. Can I then restore and update as per normal through iTunes and then just use the said untethered jailbreak tool, ie. no more need to create custom firmwares?

    2. Since I'm currently using custom firmware 4.3.3 that is already jailbroken at the out set, how would I reverse the jailbreak (but yet still make it possible for future jailbreaks) if I wanted to bring my iPhone to the service centre as my home button has been getting more and more insensitive and I think it's more of a hardware issue and my phone is still under warranty? So basically what I want to do is bring an unjailbroken phone to fix and after i get it back rejailbreak it. I know it wouldnt be as easy as installing the stock firmware 4.3.3 using tinyumbrella as we all saw how I ended up with the error 1013 lol.
