3gs Jailbreak

Hi all

I have just brought an iphone 3gs for my young son (i know old school but will not get him a new one untill i know he will look after it)and want to jailbreak it for him,but am having some problems have been at it for 3 days.

Specs: 3gs
version 4.2.1 (8C148)
Model MB496X
Serial Number 87851###### (old bootrom i think)
FW 05.15.04

the phone had been restored before i recieved it so i activated it via itunes v10.5.1.42 and synced it
i have tried many different jailbreaks but am having no joy
The progs i have tried are Redsn0w 0.9.6rc8 (wont go passed reboot screen after writing kernal)
Greenposi0n rc6.1(will not enter DFU mode)
Sn0wbreeze 2.2.1 (itunes gives error code from new ISPW)
after each attemp i have restored using itunes


First i have a question. is there a way i can find out if the phone has been jailbroken/unlocked before and would this affect me trying to jailbreak it again

and second can any one tell me an other thing i could try.

Previous jb and unlock will not affect its jailbreak-ability unless it is currently already jailbroken. The device needs to be restored before you try anything else again just because you ran so many tools on it already. Could you please check for SHSHs on the device? Go to thefirmwareumbrella.blogspot.com, download TinyUmbrella, and click "Save SHSHs" and see if it gives you anything.

If it does not give you any SHSHs for iOS 4, that's okay, there are other options we can work with. Let me know.

I have done a fresh restore inbetween each attempt.
I had just downloaded tinyUmbrella earlier today but have not had time to run the process i will find how to use it (thanks you tube)and let you know what the results are

hi Annie sorry it took so long to get back to you my laptop died and had to be restored i have ran Tinyumbrella and do not have any SHSHs saved

Old bootroms can be untethered jailbroken on ios 5.0.1. Check to make sure you DO in fact have an old bootrom, then we can go from there. You can follow this guide to check the bootrom version: How To Find Out iPhone 3GS Bootrom Version [Updated]

If neither way works, let me know and I'll tell you how to do it another, slightly more complicated way.

Thanks guys for your help as it turns out the reason i could not jailbreak to phone as a 3GS is that it is only a 3G this is what i get for trusting an ebay description.
I future i will check the serial on the Apple website.this is the link for any one eles that does not know it exists
