Jailbreaking & Unlocking iPhone 3GS on 4.1 to 4.3.3

I have done about 1hrs research and i have a bad headache. So confused about SHSH's.

I have just bought my dad an iPhone 3GS for Christmas, came on 4.1 unlocked and jailbroken.

Is there any way i can update to 4.3.3 and have it jailbroken and unlocked?

Guy i bought it from said it is on the iPad baseband so the GPS does not work, but the Google Maps location finder seems to work.

I know it does have the newer bootrom.

Download the newest tiny umbrella and plug ya phone in and see what shsh blobs ya got saved if ya have 4.3.3 on there you can go to 4.3.3 if not ya stuck there or upgrade to 5.0.1

I downloaded TU and pressed save SHSH

it now says 4.1 and 5.0.1

I dont want a tethered jailbreak as it will just confuse my dad.

4.1 has an untethered jailbreak.

If ya wanna stay untethered then no. Tethered yes you can go all the way to 5.0.1

is there a thing you can press on the homescreen to boot tethered, and if he does not like the 5.0.1 tethered, can i downgrade to 4.1 again?

You would have to open up redsnow and check boot with tethered evertime the phone restarts. Now if he is away from the computer and it happens then the phone is useless. And yes you can downgrade back to 4.1 if needed.

I would also run TU again and make sure you also check the check box labeled request shsh from Cydia on advanced tab and then click save shsh on general tab..I'm curious when the phone was jailbroken...Cydia may have more blobs for u...I would check just to make sure...

Having some more problems, decided to go for the 5.0 tethered jailbreak and unlock.

Got redsn0w and 5.0 iphone 3gs fw, clicked extras, custom ipsw, browsed to my 5.0 3gs fw, it created a no_bb fw file, clicked pwned dfu, it said done, alt clicked on restore in itunes, browsed to no_bb fw and it popped up with "This device isn’t eligible for the requested build".

Guessing it has something to do with it having the ipad baseband? How can i upgrade to ios 5.0 and keep my unlock and jailbreak?

It has nothing to do with baseband, you cannot restore to 5.0 as apple isn't signing 5.0.

got it all on 5.0.1 and running but its annoying with the tethering so want to go back to 4.1.

How the hell do i do this, feel a headache coming back again!

right, created a custom 4.1 fw with sn0wbreeze, selected ios5.0 with redsn0w and pwned booted 3gs, selected custom fw with itunes, hangs at preparing iphone for restore with the apple logo on the iphone screen, then i get an error 1601.

Whats happening?

Easier method :

PUt your iphone into normal dfu mode
Restore to stock 4.1
Exit recovery to kick it out
Activate it or jailbreak with redsn0w or Limera1n

Just tried that and itunes hangs at 'Preparing iPhone for Restore' and the iPhone shows a blank white screen. Then iTunes shows me a 1601 error.

i uninstalled mobile support and itunes and reinstalled and it all went through ok. used limera1n to jailbreak and all good now, thanks
