    Default Stupid question...

Please don't flame: I'd heard that IOS 5 does automatic updates over the air (3G/WiFi). Seems absurd to me, but plausible too in order to win the cat/mouse game with jailbreaking. I'm thinking I must've misunderstood in that it will update over the air (as opposed to through iTunes) and if it does that it will only do so if you CHOOSE to. Is that correct?

I'm intrigued to update from my 4.2.1 eventually once an untethered JB is discovered, but not if IOS 5 will just snatch it away whenever a FW update is released.

Thanks for clearing this up for me!

only update available thru iTunes. almost positive they dont offer OTA updates.
even if this were true, you would still need to confirn before update would start,
otherwise all data would be lost without any control

since Apple still signs 4.x you can update to 5.0.1 and downgrade back
so long as you create a Custom 5.0.1 IPSW first

I thought it was far-fetched to do automatic OTA updates, but wanted to be sure. Looking forward to an untethered JB for 5.0+ for some of the new features, but they're certainly not enticing enough to give up my JB for.

There are OTA updates in iOS 5.0+
They are not automatic you have to choose to install it or not.

+1. You can update firmware version wirelessly on iOS 5 but it won't do it without your consent/confirmation.

Hmm Apple would not sign 4.3.3 for me the other day and I had no choice but put 5.0.1 on my device that was stuck
I thought they stopped signing older IOS's and only with cydia blobs you could restore older? My device was really messed up and not recognized correctly

If apple still signs a fw version, there isn't a need to upgrade then downgrade. You could just restore straight to it... That statement is a bit inaccurate.

Apple still signs 4.1 for iPhone 3GS and 3.1.x for iPhone 3G. Apple is only signing 5.0.1 for iP4 and iP4S.

Right so a 3gs and an I4 would not be able to have Apple sign 4.1 for them since during the process the device is identified and Apple servers know its not a 3g or older

4.1 is still signed by Apple on 3GS. Not on iP4/S but yes on the 3GS.
