My tip for DFU mode easy
I had so much trouble getting the phone into DFU mode most instructions are well hard to follow IMHO
How I do it all the time with the new JB
Hold both buttons at once power and home (No matter if on or off)
Count 1001, 1002 to 1009 and let go of power button right away still holding the home button
now no counting because redsnow and the others will detect DFU mode right away and start
When this happens let go home button right away
this will work for both JB and rebooting
it has worked 99% of timeLast edited by MYPHONEI; 11-15-2011 at 12:20 PM.

This is a normal dfu mode and is only useful for downgrading to stock firmware which is pretty useless now, pwned dfu is what you want.

Hmm I just used this method without a hitch after restoring my Iphone 4 to stock 5.0.1
then redsnow JB tethered
then to reboot for Cydia to work
then install lots of stuff and reboot a few times
so I have no idea why you think this method does not work?
Maybe I have a special phone?
I tested semi tether and it works too BTW

You can restore to 5.0.1 from DFU/Recovery and even Springboard mode to 5.0.1 as apple is signing 5.0.1. If you try and downgrade using custom firmware with this dfu mode, it will not work.

Yeah I know but since this is general I thought to post my method since those of us stuck on IOS 5.0.1 and tethered jailbreak have to boot every now and then.
The semi tethered is great for now, I'm satisfied that a solution to use the phone in case of a crash or needed field reboot

Only if you have 4.3.3 blob saved. Check with Tiny Umbrella.
