    Default Upgrading a 3GS to ios5

    All,

I've been digging around in these forums for hours upon hours to try and figure out what i need to do but I just can't seem to get it straight.

These are the details of my phone and what I'm trying to achieve :-

    Phone : Iphone 3GS
    Baseband : 05.13.04 (New baseband)
    Current Firmware : 4.0.1
    Desired Firmware : 5.0
    SHSH Blobs saved (according to Tiny Umbrella) : 3.1.3, 4.0, 4.0.1, 4.1, 4.2.1, 4.3.3, 4.3.5)

The steps I've gone through are to download Sn0wbreeze and a stock 5.0 IPSW. I've created a custom firmware from it (which I think preserves the baseband), but when I go to restore it in iTunes I get an error 3194, saying the restore can't be performed. A bit of research showed me I needed to have TU running (including the TSS server) and uncheck the "Set Hosts to Cydia on Exit" box, which I've tried. The problem is though that when I do that, I get an error 2005 instead, so still can't restore (some googling suggested I should try a different USB cable and USB port but it doesn't work unfortunately).

I'm thinking the problem is something to do with not having 5.0 shsh blobs but I'm really not sure. Could anyone please shed some light on what I'm doing wrong or what I need to do in order to get my jailbroken upgrade?

    Thanks!

Apple has stopped signing iOS 5.0. You cannot restore to 5.0 as of now, only 5.0.1.

You cannot use your SHSH as there are no blobs for 5.0.

Thanks for the quick reply mate.

Ok so my questions are :-

    1) I keep seeing warnings saying not to upgrade to 5.0.1, would I therefore be putting anything at risk by doing so? I.e the potential to have an untethered JB in future.

    2) If I did upgrade to 5.0.1, what would the steps be? I guess I'd have to upgrade to the stock firmware and then use RedSnow to jailbreak?

I would not suggest upgrading to stock firmware.
05.13.04 should be an old baseband. I may be wrong on this?
I have updated 2 - 3gs 05.13.04 phones to 5.0 and 5.1, both are untethered, the 5.0 is unlocked (not sure about the 5.1 yet)
Either way I would try and keep your phone at 05.13.04, stock firmware will update the BB

If you're needing an unlock or care about the resell value of the device, keeping that baseband is valuable. Like ^^ said, don't restore to stock fw.

I actually wouldn't even recommend upgrading to 5.0.1. Incompatibilities and whatnot.

+1, Ultrasn0w cannot unlock it as it hasn't been updated yet
