Default any point in backing up a jailbroke IP4?

I bought a used Iphone 4 wih 4.3.3 installed but was already jailbroke. I'm new to this so I have a few questions.

    1. If I connect to itunes will it update me to IOS 5 automatically or what do I need to do to avoid this?

    2. I have read on many posts that you should always back up the phone before you make software changes. Should I back up the phone even though it already has jailbreak installed or would this be pointless?

Backup is only used for if you are already using the iphone and backup your contacts and so forth. If there is nothing on the iphone, backing up is pointless.

I was under the impression you had to back up the phones firmware in itunes where is there was a software glitch in the phone you could restore the phone remaining at the 4.3.3 firmware instead of having a software glitch on the phone and being forced to restore to the latest firmware such as 5.0.1.

I did not mean a general back up for contacts etc but more than likely i misunderstood what i read.

You should know that 5.0.1 will not have untethered jailbreak . Before you do any restore, I suggest you use ifaith to dump your current shsh blob for future downgrade if you don't have the blob saved by cydia. This dumping can only be achieved with your current firmware and iphone in operational state. Once in dfu or recovery mode, it can't be done.

Or run TU now , request blob from cydia to see if you have any and at the same time have your iphone recognize your device.
