iPhone 3G upgrade / unlock procedure

Hello,

I messed up an iPhone 3Gs pretty bad in another thread, and I have this other iPhone I would like to successfully update it and unlock it and need some help on how to do it correctly, and easily.

Right now it sits at
3.0.1
baseband: 04.26.08

I cant use jailbreakme because the firmware is too old. What tools can I use to update the firmware (fresh install is what I want) and also have it unlocked.

I assume you want the latest.
Create a custom firmware of 4.2.1 from snowbreeze 2.2.1 or Pwnage tools
Put iphone into pwned dfu mode using sb , ireb , redsnow, Pt tools
Run iTunes shift / option + restore to custom firmware of 4.2.1
Your bb is preserved this way.

do i need to have TU fired up with TSS server started?

No , you don't need it as apple is signing 4.2.1 for 3G iphone.
