Jailbreaking and Unlocking and Iphone 3G with a straight talk SIM Card!
I recently jailbreaked my Iphone 3G and unlocked it with ultrasnow. This is the steps I took:
jailbreak using redsnow, install cydia, unlock using ultrasnow, I then deactivated through redsnow, and activated in Itunes with my straight talk SIM. I did the last part to fix push notifications and battery drain.
I was surprised that my straight talk SIM activated in Itunes and really meant that I did not have to use SAM.
My question is could I have done this whole process in reverse.
Restored my Iphone in Itunes to 4.1 and then activated it. I guess on 4.2.1 you could use jailbreakme at this stage and then unlock with ultrasnow. How about with 4.1 could I then have installed cydia using redsnow.
My basic question is: Would the order of the steps to jailbreak, activate and unlock my Iphone be different having a sim card that activates in Itunes. Sorry for the confusing post. Thanks.
If you don't jb first, you can't activate with a non-official SIM card. If you're on 4.2.1, you'd still need to activate with an official SIM card to use jailbreakme. Straight Talk is a division from AT&T, I believe, so that's probably why it activated.
The order of steps wouldn't necessarily matter if the Straight Talk SIM will activate the phone fine. The benefit of activating before jailbreaking with Redsn0w is Push Notifications and YouTube failure, side effects of hacktivating.
The order of steps would matter if a non-official SIM is used though, like T-Mobile.
Thanks for the reply. It seems that the order of activating, jailbreaking, does not matter so much if your able to activate using an Official SIM. The key is to activate using SAM or an official carrier to improve battery life and get push notifications working.
If you have time would you mind checking out another post (below) of mine and seeing if you have any ideas. Thanks
