Default Very Poor Battery Life on my Iphone 3G

My Iphone 3G is experiencing very poor battery Life. I really only get about 2.5 hrs of general use. I recently jailbreaked my Iphone and this seems to have negatively affected my phone's battery life. I have tried all the usual tips to increase the battery life, but had no luck. I am tempted to restore and not jalibreak my Iphone if that is what it takes to increase the battery life. However, I would prefer not to have to do this as I like the 3rd party Apps that come with this. I have firmware 4.2.1 and baseband 06.15.00 and used redsnow to jailbreak the Iphone. Any other suggestions. Thanks.

It's possible that jailbreaking hurt your iPhone's battery, but iOS 4.x itself has been widely reported as hurting battery, performance, and everything else on the 3G. Also, your phone is (at least) a couple years old, and if it's been warm or hot for any extended period in its lifetime, the battery could be approaching the end of its usable life. Also, certain jailbreak tweaks you installed, could themselves be using more power than your phone was before.

It's impossible for us to guess what is going on inside your device, but the less heavily you use it, the longer it should last.

Thanks for the quick reply! I think you sound accurate in your assessment of my Battery drain issue's. My Cydia Apps are as follows: bitesms, WiFi Analyzer, Phone GV extensions, Activator, SB settings, MyWi 5.0, browser changer, tetherme. Would any of those Apps be causing some of my battery drain issues. I could also try restoring the Iphone, activating without jailbreak and see if that helps. What do you think?

    MyWi and tethering tools, definitely.

I don't use them, I can't give you more specific details, but many people have reported them to be huge battery hogs. Running a WiFi access point from your phone will use far more power than browsing the web directly from your phone.

But restoring, activating, and not jailbreaking may help too. It's worth a try.

I am really not using the WiFi tethering as I just have it on there in case I need it. I went ahead and took a battery from a non working Iphone 3GS and put it into my Iphone 3G (Battery Draining Iphone) and will see if this helps. If it does not then I will have to restore the phone. I will keep you posted. Appreciate the help.

I came across this video on youtube explaining how to fix the Iphone 3G battery draining problem. It is the exact firmware and baseband that I have. I am also pretty sure that the battery life started to go south after jailbreaking the phone. If replacing the battery does not do the trick, then I think this procedure of SAM that the guy explains is worth a shot. Also, replacing an Iphone battery was really easy and much simpler than replacing broken screen. Any thoughts on the video?

The battery switch really made a big difference. Putting the 3GS battery in the Iphone 3G really helped. I charged it overnight to 100% and started using it at 7:30 am. Usage 4hrs 24 min, standby 7 Hrs 54 min, call time 3 hrs, minimal browsing over WiFi. It ran down to 13% at 4 pm. That seems pretty good to me as I will not be using the phone to call 3 hrs a day usually. What activity causes the battery to drain the most? Does my stats for the day and battery drain amount seem normal for an Iphone 3G with this much activity. Should I perform the SAM procedure that is listed above or is it not worth worrying about. Seems like I am going to get to about 3/4 of my day and then have to charge again to make it through until bed time. What are your thoughts. Thanks.

I was reading about updating an Iphone software and ran across this statement. Is there a way to downgrade firmware to IOS 3 once I have upgraded to IOS 4.2.1 on my Iphone 3G. I don't think Apple let's you downgrade firmware, but I could be wrong.

"iOS 4 runs very slow on iPhone 3G and the increased software lag and response time noticeably degrades battery performance. This is generally not the case with the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4, and those who own these phones should update to the latest system software".
