Default 3g not 3gs on ios 4.2 bb 5.1107 battery drain!

    i had a iphone 3g , ios v3,1,2 , bb5,11,05 on giff gaff which uses o2 network.

updated via snowbreeze to 4.2.1 , with as much OEM settings as possible , not hacktivated (because of known push issues) , with cydia and thats it . no custom boot logos ,etc. i left it plugged in and when it rebooted , it showed the splash screen on iphone please plug phone into itunes looks like this , is this the activation screen ?

it then automatically went to iphone springboard. i have never activated an iphone before as i bought this one second hand pre jail broken . this is my first time upgrading it, is this the process of activation?

i then set up as new iphone and restored my apps /contacts.
i noticed ever since updating to 4.2 , it also asked me to update my carier settings., ever since then i never received 3g signal whereas before i did using same sim as well as my battery only lasts 1/3 of a day now . whereas before it use to last 2.5 days now if i leave it overnight it will turn off by itself low battery.

i have just deleted my gmail account as there were reports of it causing battery drain and to re add it later, i have also done home + power button reset / resspring board / soft reboot . got sysinfo but cannot see what services are drainging the battery.

reset network settings and reloadede thje APN settings for giff gaff , put into airplane mode still no 3g signal. turned off/on cellular data

another issue is if i used an non official original carier sim , would it still of let me activate it or would it have prompted me to put in an o2 sim ? im sure in snowbreeze i left hacktivation unticked but my status bar does say o2-uk although its giff gaff network
