Hello all,
Im sure this is a very stupid question but I want to be sure before I mess anything up... I have a 3GS running 4.0.1 and modem firmware 5.13.04 and the old bootrom.
I want to upgrade to iOS5 and unlock it. I understand that I can use the Redsn0w jailbreak and then unlock using UltraSnow.
1> Will I be able to successfully do an unthethered jailbreak with the latest RedSnow?
2> Will I be able to follow that with a successful unlock using the latest UltraSnow?
3> Will this method mess up my baseband?
You need to restore to custom firmare of IOS 5 to preserve your baseband.
It depends on your bootrom, if you have the old bootrom, then it is untethered jailbreak , otherwise tethered.
Jailbreaking with Redsn0w will not mess up your baseband.
I do have an old bootrom. Now you mentioned custom firmare of IOS 5, I have a question regarding that.
Here are the steps Im going to follow:
1> Download iOS5 file
2> Point RedSnow to that file and run it (restore)
So when I point RedSnow to the custom IPSW option and select the downloaded iOS5 file, does that mean Im using a custom firmware? Is this the right way to go about it?
Could you please please give me a step by step on jialbreaking and unlocking? The confusion is driving me mad and it would probably take you just a minute...
I would really appreciate it...

Redsn0w 0.9.9b7 for windows does not build custom firmware, you need to use a Mac. Latest version of Snowbreeze can build one.
If you are using a Mac :
Run Redsn0w > Extra > Select your Ipsw > Custom Ipsw > Pwned DFU > Run Itunes > Option + Restore to NO BB custom Ipsw.
Sorry I didnt mention it before... Im using Windows and have never used Snowbreeze before...
Just to make things clear, do I use Snowbreeze to jailbreak as well? Or should I use REdsnow for that?
Could you give a similar step-by-step for snowbreeze please?
