Jailbreak + Unlock iPhone 3GS, Need Advice/Help

I have 2 iphone 3gs, one is running fw 3.1 and the other is 4.2.1

I am trying to unlock these phones so i can stop using it with att

I have jailbroken itouch multiple times before, but never an iphone

I understand that jailbreakme.com is back up, but only works for 3gs that is 4.3-4.3.3
This seems to be the easiest jailbreaking option, but will there be a problem in regards to the SHSH blobs?
I dont really understand the SHSH blobs thing...I need to unlock both phones...any helpful advice would be appreciated.

Download the latest tiny umbrella, plug iphone in, request shsh from cydia is selected and click save shsh , look under general tab.
Do this on both iphones, tell me your current baseband.

TinyUmbrella kept giving me this message:

APPLE is NOT signing iPhone3GS 4.2.1 (8C148a) SHSH requests anymore. All you can do now is select CYDIA and hope that CYDIA has your SHSH saved. If not, there is nothing you can do.

So i unchecked the Request SHSH from Cydia...thats the only way i could save

But here are the basebands for the phones

Baseband: 05.11.07-6.4_M3S2
and
Baseband: 05.15.04-6.4_M3S2

If you select request host file to cydia and click save shsh, under general you get nothing . Uncheck : request hosts file from cydia and click save shsh. You should at least see 4.1 shsh blob under general tab. What do you see in general tab ?

Your first one can be unlocked by Ultrasnow but the second one has to go with iPad bb which breaks your gps.

Ok so for the iPhone 3GS on 3.1 i get:
iPhone 3GS 4.1 (8B117)
iPhone 3GS 5.0gm (9A334)

The iPhone 3GS on 4.2.1 has:
iPhone 3GS 4.1 (8B117)
iPhone 3GS 5.0gm (9A334)

From what i see, both 3gs have never been jailbroken.
1st and 2nd one can only be restored to 4.1 or 5.0 which apple are currently signing.

Both of them can be restored to custom firmware of 4.1, 1st one can be unlock with Ultrasn0w right away but second one have to update to ipad baseband via redsn0w to be unlocked by Ultrasn0w.

Using Ipad baseband cannot be reversed and breaks your GPS funciton. Inaccurate on Navigation, location services and so forth, so think carefully if you want to unlock it.

You are right about the, never being jailbroken.
I'm doing this so my parents dont have to pay a ridiculous ATT bill

So the iPhone 3GS on fw 4.2.1, with Baseband: 05.15.04-6.4_M3S2 can be unlocked right away via Ultrasn0w?

and the GPS only really matters on one of the iPhones, the one mentioned above.

And finally, do i have to jailbreak the iPhone before using Ultrasn0w

BB 05.11.07 > restore to custom firmware of 4.1 , you are already jailbroken once restored, install ultrasn0w from Cydia to unlock right away.
You can also restore to custom firmware of IOS 5 , it doesn't jailbreak so you need to jailbreak it with redsn0w 0.9.9b7 and unlock with Ultrasn0w from cydia.

BB 05.15.04 > same as above but after the jailbreak, run redsn0w again and choose only ipad bb ( you have to download Ipad 1 3.2.2 ipsw to be browsed to ) , run redsn0w in xp sp2 compatibility mode to avoid crashing when updating to ipad bb. Do not interrupt while updating ipad bb.

So to restore to a custom fw, i just download a custom fw and then use shift+restore on itunes?
