Is it safe to upgrade a jailbroken iPhone using itunes?

I know it will cancel out the jailbreak, but I have 4.3 jailbroken on my 3GS and I'd like to have 5. If I tell iTunes to just update, will it brick my phone? Thanks!

it wont brick your phone.

your update will probably go fine, but a few words of caution from someone for whom it very much did not:

- manually back up your photos separately
- manually back up your contacts separately
- take your backup and save a copy somewhere else, outside of the standard folder

most people have had few issues with restoring from any backup, including one thats jb. i think im just very unlucky, and i also got screwed by apple+mobileme. :-/

While it is impossible to render a iPhone as a non-interactive brick, upgrading regularly may cause problems and require a restore.

My suggestion: backup and restore in iTunes.
