Current jailbreak 4.2.1 - upgrade path to jailbreak 5

Evening folks.

I currently have an iPhone 4 purchased directly from apple and sim free; and therefore unlocked to any network carrier.

It is happily Running iOS 4.2.1 and has been for so time as I have felt it was stable and of no benefit to upgrade until now.
iOS 5 has some nice new features that i would like to avail of and I do understand that tethered is my only option at present.

But I am such a newbie and things like blobs etc don't mean much to me. So before I restore my iphone 4 with an apple iOS 5 then attempt to jailbreak. Is there any definitive path that I should take as I am jumping from a much older version?
Is there also any precautions I can take to future proof myself like these blobs or whatever?

SHSHs blobs I believe won't be of anymore use on iOS 5+.

However, if you've got any saved for iOS 4 they're good for you to downgrade to if you ever need to.

Get TinyUmbrella and see if you have any saved. If you don't care and think you won't be downgrading back from iOS 5, I suppose you don't have to do this.

If you don't have any SHSHs saved to date, you can still save them for 4.2.1 with iFaith, since your device is currently still on 4.2.1.

As far as iOS 5 goes, looks like you understand jailbreaking it. So simply hit restore in iTunes and it will upgrade to iOS 5. The. You may use Redsn0w to (semi-tethered) jb it. After jb, run redsn0w again and boot tethered the phone to get everything up and running properly.

She certainly is a star isn't she! It's so nice to see that somebody is so willing to help people learn and figure out how to do all of this iPhone tech. Annie has always helped me and answered questions for me (even though I'm sure she's been through it a million times before). Thanks for your help i.Annie and I'm sure I'm saying that for a lot of people. You're a great person.

Finally got round to doing this.
Used IFaith as you suggested to backup my shsh blobs just incase thanks for that pointer.

Then followed the normal upgrade to stock ios 5 and jailbreak from there - took a couple hours though but well worth it.

Just can wait for an untethered jailbreak with Siri ported to Iphone4!!!!
