3GS old bootrom iOS 5

I don't need to unlock all I would like to do is upgrade to iOS 5 and jailbreak? Old bootrom = untethered. Im jailbroke now just want to get a quick confirmation on using redsn0w to jailbreak. Anything special need to be done? Thanks in advance!!!

Upgrade to iOS 5 in iTunes and use Redsn0w 0.9.9b6 to jb. It will be semi-tethered.

Edit: scratch the semi-tethered part, sorry, its a habit to type that

you're right, your old boot will not be tethered.

Thank you! I keep reading about BB and the IPSW crap lol I wasn't sure if I needed to do this on an old bootrom 3GS.

Yeah the baseband is completely irrelevant to you since you don't need an unlock

Can I jump in here to check something (the site search isn't working) apologies for the newbie nerves.

I have Bootrom 359.3, I think this is the old one, and I have BaseBand 05.14.02, but this is irrelevant as I'm on the old BootRom, Correct? I can go ahead and upgrade to IOS5 and Jailberak with the latest Redsn0w release and I'll be untethered. Am I right?

The baseband isn't relevant not because you have the old bootrom, it isn't relevant if you don't need to unlock the phone. Your bootrom determines if your jailbreak is tethered or not. But yes if you're on that baseband right now and you're not needing to unlock, then it isn't relevant to the situation you're asking about. So then yes you can update to iOS 5, jailbreak with Redsn0w, and have an untethered jb.

Thanks for the quick reply. When you say 'unlock', do you mean unlock it from a particular carrier? If so, I don't need to do that.

Yep unlocking is for use with another carrier beside the one the device is locked to. So since you don't need to you don't need to worry about the baseband.

I also have a 3GS with 359.3 old bootrom and 05.16.02 baseband. I paid for the unlock from my carrier (Orange Switzerland), so don't need an additional unlock. Untethered jailbreak on 5.0 via redsn0w 0.9.9b5 is working just dandy for me. Now I'm working my way through contacting the developers of my favourite JB apps and tweaks to tell them what doesn't work on iOS 5...

Just successfully updated my old bootrom 3GS to iOS5 and jailbroke (untethered) with Redsn0w 0.9.9b6

Went smooth no issues at all and the Cydia icon was correct upon automatic reboot.

So I'm on IOS 5 with my3GS with the old Bootrom, I just download the latest Redsn0w and let it do it's thing right?

Also to those that have done it, how's your battery life like on a Jailbroken iPhone 3GS with the old Bootrom?

Yes.

I'm on an iPhone 4 but my battery life is really amazing on JB iOS 5.
