iPad baseband is the only way right now. You will lose GPS and there is no going back so be aware of those drawbacks. For more info click on my "Can I unlock" link in my signature.

thanks for the replies guys.
ok so i followed the iclarified instruction to jailbreak the phone. im guessing i successfully jailbroke it because cydia is installed. i used cydia to install ultrasn0w, but my it did unlock the phone. not sure what to do next. i tried uninstalling ultrasn0w and reinstalling it again, but still nothing. arrrgh, any clue what to do next?

You need to run redsn0w to install iPad baseband to unlock as you have a non unlockable bb.

@iYeow, after downloading redsn0w, i couldn't figure out why it wasn't working on my mac. i ended up downloading it on a pc, but now i am stuck at the very first screen that says, "please select the corresponding IPSW for your CURRENT firmware." I'm not sure what this is referring to. I am truly a lost novice at this. Is there a guide that shows step by step how to run redsn0w to install the iPad baseband? thanks.

You have to browse to stock 4.1 ipsw when asked. Then select only option iPad baseband update.
If you still don't know , go check out the stickies thread

Thanks @iYeow! It's unlocked! Yes, I didn't know a lot of the lingo around here, but thanks for pointing me in the right direction haha.
