3gs running a 4.3.4 - a few questions for newbie

Hi All,
I'm sure if I look in the specific place, there is something about this question, but not sure which area to search in. I bought a mint 3GS last nite. I didn't realize that the guy had already upgraded it to 4.3.4. After researching last nite, I see that it can't be an untethered JB yet (only tethered with redmondpie?). I tried Greenpois0n and it went halfway thru the motions and locked up on the iphone. I wasn't too worried at first though. I bought this phone for my bro who already has AT&T. I run my iphone4 on gophone and it runs fine without a data plan. He has a normal pay plan (contract) on a cheaper phone without data (non-smart). I planned on just sticking in his sim. I'm not sure if he needs it jailbroken or not since its an AT&T sim. I stuck in one of my older AT&T sims just to get past the emergency call screen and get the phone activated. So I'm at the point of the main home screen and everything is working. What I didn't realize is that once his sim is stuck in the phone, that AT&T will recognize that his sim card is in a smart phone and automatically tack the data plan on the phone. He doesn't want to use data. I'm assuming though that there is no work around for this. Will AT&T charge the $15 or $25 a month fee to his current plan? I may be able to downgrade to 4.3.3 and then jailbreak but I doubt the guy ever saved the SHSH blobs using TinyUmbrella and I was reading that Apple has possibly already closed the signing for these? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Run tiny umbrella once.it will tell u if there are shsh :-)
Also AT&T sux from what I have read. At&t was bought by another local company in my country 8-10 years back so I don know

I will install Tiny Umbrella and check the iphone when I get home. If there are no SHSH blobs for previous firmwares, I'm assuming I'm outta luck. If there are some, can I assume that I CAN jailbreak using redsnow latest rev? Not sure though if the only possibility still is tethered or if there is an untethered version out yet.

Yeah 4.3.3 signing window was closed a couple days ago so if u don't all ready have them you're sol...BTW, how does 4.3.4 run on the 3gs? I had 4.3 and 4.3.1 on my old 3GS and it was horribly stuttery scrolling through thing like email box and music etc. And also stuttery launching apps. I had to swap it at apple store for unrelated issue and new one came with 4.2.1 still on it, so I don't want to update until I get positive responses from others that the performance hit was corrected past 4.3.1. Hi. I only messed with it on wifi for a little bit thru safari and didn't notice any lag at all, but there is basically nothing on the flash at all, about 7.5 gb free I guess figuring everything in. Any suggestions? From my online research today, the answer I'm seeing is that if you TELL AT&T upfront that you were given a used iphone and wanna add the $15/mo data plan, they'll do it for you. But if you don't tell them and they find out you've gone from a dumb phone to an iphone by putting it your old sim, they get pissed and automatically start billing you for the $25/mo plan and you'll be stuck with it for 3 months.
I'm pretty sure I'm SOL with any SHSH blobs on Cydia since a girl had this phone and apparently didn't use it all, it looks new and was probably never jb'd, etc.

P.S. A little confused about the data plan requirement though, I have a gophone sim that I put in my iphone4 and it works fine for several months, and before that I had a 3gs on gophone with no data plan. And the wife has a 3gs for over a year on Tmobile and didn't have a data plan until recently when she wanted to add the plan thru tmobile

Update:
I was able to downgrade from 4.3.4 to 4.1 since I apparently had SHSH blobs saved on Saurik's server. I used Tiny Umbrella with TSS server and restored by picking 4.1 ipsw in itunes and getting out of the recovery loop with Tiny Umbrella. I'm back at the home screen on the 3gs with it showing that I'm under 4.1 firmware and modem baseband 05.16.02. What are my options with the newer baseband and older firmware as far as jailbreaking and possibly unlocking (not holding breath on unlocking part). Gotta get it jb'd first hopefully. Hopefully I can. Any suggestions? Thanks!

did try that and it got stuck on the "entering dfu mode" screen and nothing happened. Do I need a newer version? I know that I'm definitely on 4.1 and modem firmware / baseband is 5.16.02 according to the general / about settings on the phone itself. Itunes and tiny umbrella also both confirm that I'm on 4.1. Is there a secret with Limera1n that I'm missing. I followed the instructions but it keeps freezing indefinitely at the screen for entering dfu mode. does it take longer then a few minutes? I hold down the power but then both the home and power as it says and once it says entering dfu mode....wait - should I release the home button? I was thinking since I have the newer baseband 5.16.02 but lower firmware 4.1 that something is incompatible? thanks for the help

I meant to say that it stays forever at the "in DFU mode....wait....." screen in the little dialog box. If I put in DFU mode before I run the program, it won't find the iphone though will it?

Thanks for the info. Couldn't get it going successfully with Greenpois0n and when I disconnected the cable it came up saying "done" and I thought I was good. When I went in looking for cydia it wasn't there. Tried this twice. Gave up and was able to jailbreak it with Red Snow 0.9.6b4. Worked! But now with my baseband of 5.16.02, the way I understand from reading here is that I would have to upgrade to the newer ipad baseband for an unlock but that in turn would render my gps useless correct? How would I even upgrade the baseband and still keep the firmware at 4.1? I only have the SHSH blobs for 4.1, 4.3.4, and 5.0 betas for some reason. Just bought this phone off some guy who never did anything special with it so not sure how the 4.1 blobs were saved unless I got lucky somehow cuz 4.3.4 was on it when I bought it.

Needs 4.2.1 right? Let me find a way to circumvent that

A new redsn0w was released for 4.3.4 tethered right ? Does it have the install iPad bb option? Also can u run f0recast once? If ur phone has old bootrom u are untethered for life.
