    Default upgrading to 4.0...

hii, i'm on tmobile. 3.1.2. i wanna go up to 4.0 but i'm really scared about it, lol. i hate being on a lower firmware because i feel like i can't do a lot but if i upgrade, but will i lose my unlock and jailbreak, plus things i have installed from cydia? or does a back up on itunes cover everything?

You can make a custom 4.3.3 firmware with snowbreeze or pwnage tool and restore to that in itunes. That will preserve your baseband so that you can still unlock after. iTunes only backups non jailbreak related stuff so you will have to reinstall anything you installed with cydia after.

Ok, lets start at the beginning. Do you have a iPhone 3G or 3GS? Are you on windows or Mac?

4.2.1 is as high as you can go then. You can follow this to get there if you want: iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak and Unlock Your iPhone 3G Using PwnageTool (Mac) [4.2.1]

4.0 and up will run a bit slower on a iPhone 3G though.
