Please help, my phone has bricked.

I have an IPhone 3GS, 4.2.1 and it had a Tethered Jailbreak.
Recently, stupidly, I let the phone run out of battery and when I try and tether it with redsn0w nothing happens.
I don't really know what else to do, so I signed up to this forum.
It has been charging for hours, but there is no sign of life no matter what I try.
If you can help me, please reply.

If you hold down power and home for about 10-15 seconds, does the phone reboot?

like said above, hold down the power and home button for about ten seconds while the phone is plugged in. It should then show the dead battery symbol at the very least. It will then charge.

Nothing seemed to work, but my friend has restored the phone, updated and jailbroke it to a newer firmware.
