iTunes not recognizing iPhone

I'm running a 16GB iphone 3gs (jailbroken and unlocked) with iOS 4.0.1 with the old baseband. When I went to sync my phone today, it said: "itunes cannot read the contents of the iphone. Go to the summary tab in iphone preferences and click restore to restore this iphone to factory settings."

But I know if I do that, I'll lose my jb and more importantly, my unlock.

what do I do?
