Ok purchased a second hand iphone 2g last year was in mint condition and couldnt afford the newer models.
It came jailbroken and has cydia on it (although all these different thingys make no sense to me lol) Its running on 3.1.2 but obviously the newer apps need newer versions....sooo the question is can I update it and if so how....thanks xx

The only upgrade possible for iPhone is 3.1.3 but it isn't a big improvement. If you are not at ease with jailbreaking and unlocking procedures, you'd better stay with what you have. Anyway the newer apps need much more ram to run smoothly.
As for Cydia: it's a great source for free apps and tweaks... I guess if you use it for the 1st time it will prompt you to upgrade essentials, after this go to Sections and start browsing for apps.
    Good luck
