SSH'd to Var/stash/applications and manually deleted the shortcut_.apps

Then respring, Bingo! all gone....

how do I get rid of six icons on my springboard (they are arrows facing left, with page 0 underneath them)?

I cannot delete them (cydelete) and cannot find the package for them in sources list.

Can somebody explain how they got there...

The fact that you have been sshing into iphone and deleting the application apps under stash, it will be difficult to tell what is going on, the best thing to fix this issue is a restore again.
