Hacktivate and then use ultrasn0w...?

I've got a friend that tells that when you restore or update a iPhone, without the original SIM, the iPhone wont be usable, and you'll be locked in the Emergency lockscreen. However, if I hacktivated it (it think that that's what hacktivate does) and bypassed the lockscreen and install ultrasn0w, wont the phone allow other carriers, so that I can call?

It depends on what baseband/modem firmware the phone has. Ultrasnow does not work on them all.

Ultrasn0w works on my baseband. I'm pretty sure of that, because I'm using it right now, but with 3.1.3.

Ultrasn0w will not work on basebands that comes with stock firmware of 4.1 or higher.
