Need advice on how to upgrade 3gs to 4.2.1 or higher
Hello everyone! I'm new to Modmyi and what a great site it is!
I have a 3GS firmware 3.1.3 that is jailbroken with the old Spirit jailbreak. Last week I tried to upgrade/restore my phone to 4.2.1., 4.3.2 and even the newest 4.3.3 and to no avail. So now I'm planning on doing this upgrade again this coming weekend, since I use my phone for my business and can't be without it for long.
Now, I've tried custom downloaded ipsw's and factory restore ones, even tried to upgrade directly thru iTunes and all I get every time are errors, 1015, 3194 and 1600. Very frustrating to say the least lol. I did manage to restore it back to 3.1.3 after it screwed up like 8 times or more and re jailbroke it again with Spirt. I must be doing something in the wrong way or in the wrong order. The only thing that did happen, is my BB did update to 06.15. I do have my shsh blobs saved for 3.1.3, but no other ones saved.
I'm on a official carrier, so I have no need to unlock.
iPhone 3gs Info:
Serial No. 5K010******
Model: MB715LL
Current Version: 3.1.3 (7E18)
Carrier: Rogers 5.0 (Canada)
Modem Firmware:l 06.15.00
How can I upgrade and jailbreak (untethered) to say 4.3.3 keeping my current Base Band of 06.15 if possible?
Can I use a custom 4.3.3 ipsw, and is there any good step by step guides available to go by?
I would very much appreciate any help or advice.
Thanks!

Use snowbreeze or pwnage tool to make a custom 4.3.3 and restore to that. If you get error 3194 do this first:
Open tiny umbrella
Click on advanced
Deselect box that says set hosts to cydia on exit
Click apply and close tiny umbrella

Simon is correct. It sounds like your host files are pointing towards Cydia's servers which is the reason you managed to get 3.1.3 back on it.
For some reason I can never get an SHSH signature on CURRENT firmware when pointing to Cydia's servers.
So as Simon said... Lol
Create a custom 4.3.3 ipsw with snowbreeze.
Back up your phone.
Put phone in PwnedDFU mode with redsn0w.
Make sure your host files are pointing at APPLE'S servers and the phone should take 4.3.3
Then restore from your backup.

Thanks Simon, can I use a custom ipsw file made using pwnage tool? Or is
it better to make your own? I'm using Windows XP SP3.

Well if you only have windows you cant use pwnage tool. You can use snowbreeze to make a custom firmware though.

Not understanding you. I am telling you to make a custom one. Do you mean you downloaded a custom firmware from somewhere already?

Sorry about that. Yes I did download one today. I just wanted to know
if I can use that one, or if it's better to make your own like you suggested.

You have to use a custom ipsw. I'm not sure if you did it or realized that someone has installed the 6.15.00 iPad baseband.
Use snowbreeze and make your own. You MUST hacktivate the phone. Even if you run AT&T the baseband will not work until ultrasn0w is applied.
I recommend making your partition size 999mb.

I would not hactivate it actually. 6.15 baseband will work just fine with a official carrier sim but you may need to install ultrasnow to fix a signal bar issue that may occur. Do not hactivate though as that will break your push notifications.

I'm on an official Rogers (Canada) carrier. I think I'll try making one with snowbreeze first and see what happens.
Thanks again for all your advice guys!

Well everyone, I managed to get my phone updated to 4.4.3 and keep
my 6.15bb. I had a few problems along the way, but did manage to
figure them all out. Call it a learning experience for sure! Lol. I tried
making two different custom images with sn0wbreeze, a 4.2.1 and the
4.3.3, for some reason they just wouldn't work for me at all. So I ended
up downloading a 4.3.3 image made with pawnage tool and installed
that one, and to my surprise it went awesome! No errors what so ever!
I just wanted to thank all of you for your helping me out!
Cheers
