How to upgrade correctly

Hi folks.
I have iPhone 4 on 4.2.1 and bb 03.10.01 and JB with GreenPoison untethered.
Can someone point me in the right direction to learn how to correctly ( read-without losing cydia stuff/apps/contacts etc etc) upgrade to later iPhone firmware and re jailbreak.
I have SHSH saved in tinyumbrella if that makes any difference.
Is it worth upgrading my firmware to a later version? Why?
What is all this baseband stuff about and why is it significant?
I currently have "pkgbackup" and "backboard". Will they help me restore stuff or won't they be needed in this case?

You can't just backup then update

Pkgbackup will save your jb data as a contact so as long as you back your contacts up in iTunes, you can get all your jb stuff restored back on the phone after the upgrade and rejb.

You won't need SHSHs if you want to upgrade to 4.3.3. You can either use a custom firmware or you can upgrade straight to 4.3.3 stock and jb with redsn0w. I'm assuming you don't need an unlock.

So if you don't need an unlock, your baseband is irrelevant to anything else.

Hey thanks for that. That's a couple of things answered. I have been uploading pkgbackup to dropbox. I've found in jailbreakmatrix that I can go untethered to 4.3.2 but I still want to know the correct process.

If you want 4.3.2 you'll need SHSHs. Do you have them for 4.3.2 and do you know how to use them. If not let me know.

Otherwise, no SHSHs means you have to use 4.3.3. But that's untethered too so it should be fine.

I only have SHSH 4.2.1 saved but I'm not fussed about which version to upgrade to. If 4.3.3 untethered is available that's fine. So what's the correct process?
Sync/backup in iTunes - Restore to factory - jailbreak to 4.3.3 ???

You don't need to preserve your baseband right?

If that's the case, then yes sync and backup your stuff. Upgrade to stock 4.3.3. Then jailbreak it with redsn0w 0.9.6rc16
