iPhone 3G
Okay.. I have an iPhone 3G running 4.2.1. I know 4.2.1 firmware really slows the performance on it.. Would upgrading to 4.3 slow it down even more, keep the same performance or possible speed it up? Any help would be appreciated. Thnx.

Downgrade to 3.1.3 that is the best firmware for the 3g. Not too old not too new. Here is a link. » felixbruns.de

OK, I downloaded the 3.1.2. file and I keep getting an error,iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1015).

use tinyumbrella to kick it out of recovery mode

1015 is a successful restore, just a failure to change the baseband. DO as Str4y suggested and then you may jb as normal.
Cool. Got it to work. Now, just 1 more question, is there anyway to put my contacts back on?

If you have them saved onto the sim card go into settings mail calendar tab and scroll down click import contacts from sim card
Super Penguin Mod
Did you sync your contacts to your comp before you did the restore?

It probably won't take the iOS 4 backup on 3.1.x. It usually reports the backup is too new for the current fw version.
Livin the iPhone Life
oh yes i forgot about this. if you are good with files then you could get it to use the backup

It's such a headache though. Maybe I'm just lazy
Yup, saying back up is to new and they are not all saved to sim card.

You should have synced them before restoring. For future reference, you ought to use iTunes to backup your contacts
I suppose you could try what Str4y said but I have no idea how to extract data from a backup file.

@oleo do you know where backups are located?
I don't. Where aever iTunes puts them.

This may be quite a challenge TBH are you sure you want to try doing this? You will need to know how to open the backup and where to edit
