Unable to Jailbreak (untethered) iPhone 3G with 4.2.1 OS and 5.14.04 Baseband
I have been searching the internet to find a way to just jailbreak (untethered) my iphone 3G and I am not having any luck.
I have seen posts on how to jailbreak using greenpois0n but I could not get the app to go into DFU mode and I always get the "try again" message. Some have said that greenpois0n no longer support iPhone 3G. I have tried both rc6 and rc5.
I have tried other options such as redsn0w and sn0wbreeze to create custom ipsw file to upload into my iPhone, but this seemed to cause crashes when I attempt to text someone (I click on Contacts button, select my contact and click on text message button and the phone crahes and reboots).
I would really appreciated if someone can tell me if jailbreaking is possible and how?
Thanks...B

Greenpois0n definitely won't work for your phone. Try redsn0w again. That's your best option. What happens with redsn0w when you use it?

With redsn0w the iPhone crashes. I have followed the following steps:
1. Downloaded 4.2.1 OS from apple.
2. Restored OS to iphone using DFU mode and Shift+Restore.
3. Activated my iPhone.
4. Used redsn0w to jailbreak.
After jailbreak and when I tried to send a text message the phone crahses. The steps I follow to send a text as follow:
1. On home screen I click on Contacts.
2. I select my contact and click on text message button.
3. After I click on text message button the I get the spinner and the phone goes back to home screen with "slide" to unlock screen. ( before jailbreaking I am able to sent text message with no crash)
I have tried many times with installing 4.2.1 and jailbreaking using redsn0w and always encounter the crash issue with attempting to text.
Thanks...B

Are you restoring from back up?

No. I am always using a new install of 4.2.1 and then jailbreaking using redsn0w.

That's weird. Are you installing anything from Cydia before you test the texting?

I would suggest 0.9.6rc8 as that's the one that seems to work best for 4.2.1.
However, it seems to be difficult to find that version nowadays.
I can't think of any other way besides trying a custom 4.2.1 fw made by pwnagetool (if you don't have Mac, find the fw online) that doesn't have the iPad baseband packaged.
Pwnagetool is more reliable than sn0wbreeze.

Right but i would really suggest finding a custom fw online that is made by pwnagetool if sn0wbreeze isn't working out for you. Sn0wbreeze is known to be buggy on an iPhone 3G.

I have downloaded a customer ipsw from the site below and tried both activated and unactivate files with no luck. I always get error 1600 or 1602 or 1604. I tried to use iREB in order to setup the custom ipsw and still ran into the 160x errors.
here is the the link
(PM me and I can tell you where I found my files)
P.S. I am not sure if this should happen but after I get the 160x errors I press both home and power buttons and I am iPhone reboot with no problems and I am able to use it. (although the OS is not the custom ipsw but my existing 4.2.1 that is not jailbroken).Last edited by bluem; 05-09-2011 at 07:26 PM.

Restore to stock 4.2.1 again , Run redsn0w 0.9.6 rc8 in xp2 compatibility mode > browse to stock 4.2.1 > choose only install Cydia and finished up your jailbreak .
See if it worksLast edited by iYeow; 05-09-2011 at 11:03 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

im a newbie at this but ive just managed to get mine out of recovery mode and re jailbroken
basically my phone was shop jailbroken
3g (not s)
base band latest ipad 6.15
and 4.2.1
i messed up and ended up in safemode and then tried to restore . and things got worse and worse,
anyway after spending all t his afternoon and most of tonight im up and running again
here is what i did (thanks youtube)
restored using 4.1 custom firmware
i then get 1015 err.
open up tiny umberella and use exit recovery,
that then rebooted phone
everything came on. i then put in an 02 payg sim as it was locked to this network.
that registered the phone. i then jailbroke with redsnow and unlocked with ultrasnow
its took all day but im real pleased with what ive learnedLast edited by markyb; 05-09-2011 at 02:29 PM.
