Question How would I UPGRADE my jailbreak?

I have an iPod Touch 4G and its at 4.1, I tried to Google this but just got some very outdated links.

From my understanding, at the time of this post the latest firmware (4.3.3) has an untethered jailbreak.

Problem is, I have no idea how you are supposed to upgrade from a jailbreak to a jailbreak.

Am I just supposed to upgrade to 4.3.3 official then jailbreak that? Or am I supposed to somehow keep it jailbroken while upgrading? Will I lose any of my installed software (official or not official) in the process or their saved data/settings? I have a lot of games on it and would hate to lose my progress.

And finally, what about my SHSH blobs? Back when I originally jailbroke it, EVERY guide mentioned a "make my life easier" button in Cydia, however, apparently this was removed from Cydia right around the time I jailbroke my iPod (which led to a lot of confusion due to every guide still assuming it was still there). I have no idea if my 4.1 SHSH blobs have been backed up.

    Help?

When you go into Cydia, on the first screen at the top it will tell you what shsh's it has on file for that phone

To upgrade, get Pkgbackup from Cydia. Backup then sync with iTunes.
update via iTunes to 4.3.3 if it gets stuck at restore use tiny umbrella to kick it out
Then use redsn0w to jailbreak and redownload pkgbackup, restore from the backup and hey presto your done.

Hmm, I see, ok, at least my SHSH blobs are backed up then, that's good.

You didn't really answer any of my questions though, why do I need to make backup? So I will lose information? If so, what will I lose when upgrading?

Also, Pkgbackup is $8! Do I really need this thing?

You could try aptbackup, it's free but doesn't do as good a job as pkgbackup

Thanks, but I don't understand why I need a backup app in the first place, what do I risk losing when I update exactly?

You will lose everything you have installed with Cydia when you update and rejailbreak

All your jailbreak apps, themes and tweaks.
I normally backup my themes folder to my desktop then run apt or pkg backup then sync with iTunes then upgrade

I see, that's not too big a problem since I can just re-install them, what about stuff downloaded from the app store? Or more importantly, the save-data from stuff I downloaded from the app store? I have quite a lot of games and would not want to lose my progress in them.

In order to update you will need to update and then rejailbreak with a program like redsn0w or you can update to a prejailbroken firmware with pwnage tool. Either way you will lose all Cydia apps. Your Apple AppStore apps are safe, just make sure you backup with iTunes. This includes data within apps in the AppStore. The SHSH are for downgrading so although those are important to save, it's not really important for you to know right now in order to update

Do if I perform a backup through iTunes it will backup all the data of the apps as well, or do I have to manually specify that?

When you say backup through iTunes, do you mean just syncing all of my apps and media, or is there a specific "backup" function in iTunes?

You can sync as normal but if you want to you can right-click your iPod in iTunes and there is a Backup option. It seems more extensive but maybe it's not

    Thanks a lot everyone

EDIT: The update process worked fine, but running Aptbackup erased EVERYTHING! All of my apps are GONE! How do I restore them?

Aptbackup sometimes screws up, that's why people recommend pkgbackup.

There isn't a way to get your stuff back without restoring when aptbackup messes up like that.

Isn't "restore" basically iTunes' way of saying "reformat"?

I do NOT want to lose my data, according to iTunes its still all taking up space on my device, this is precisely what I was trying to avoid.

It's setting your device back to factory settings.

You could try to recover the data through a data extractor by SSHing into your device. But I don't know how to do that, maybe Google it or someone else may know.

Sorry for taking a while to respond.

So...... seems that about an hour or two after everything got erased..... everything came back (well, everything that wasn't a jailbroken app). All Aptbackup seemed to do was give me a scare......

Anyway, so I'm definitely going to delete Aptbackup now... but.... I noticed that one of the packages it installed was OpenSSH. I never used this, and I am well aware that you leave your iPod vulnerable by leaving the default password in. Am I thinking of the wrong program or is this it? Can I just remove OpenSSH along with Aptbackup or is it needed for some other homebrew applications?

I just hope m iPod doesn't mess up again once I install a jailbroken app from Cydia.... stupid Aptbackup....

If you're not going to SSH into your device, you can delete openSSH. The default password deal isn't a big problem if you don't use SSH.
