    Default A new original stuck-on-Apple-logo challenge !

    Hi !

It's been long time I've not came here!

Here a new challenge like all those stuck-on-Apple-logo, but this one has a specialty : I really need to recover some data.

    iPhone 3G 16GB, PwngeTool jailbreaked 3.1.2, I didn't open Cydia for months.
It's very often subject to a lack of memory : sometimes I can't answer a call because of it, and rebooting it is very hard (safe mode after 10 minutes of booting, crash, reboot, safe mode, SBSettings free memory, crash, safe mode, free memory, and after a time, it's finally ok).

    But yesterday night, drama.
I installed a free app I tried, quit it, and let my iPhone for 2 hours. There were 10% battery.
Since, when a press the power button, the Apple logo appear, and the screen turns off after 2 minutes (10 minutes to boot usually).

It's not a battery issue (what confirm to me the guy from Genius Bar), I can go in DFU, but not access SSH. If I just can delete this app maybe it...

Well. This is now a challenge. I really do not want to loose all datas in (backup with iTunes took 20 minutes 4 months ago, since, I didn't tried again).

I tried iRecovery (didn't worked), DiskAid and iPhoneTunnel (on a Mac, 10.5).

    Ideas ?

    Thanks so much !
    Please excuse my English...

Normally I'd refer you towards the "Emergency Ramdisk" technique, but that doesn't work on iOS 3.x...

I'm assuming you're trying to turn the phone on with the charging cord in (and plugged into the wall), and are trying to turn the phone on again after the screen goes dark?

If that isn't doing it, and you don't have SSH or AFP access in there... I think you're SOL (unless you can make another backup in iTunes). Sorry.

“NOT for iOS 3.x (a similar ramdisk w/SSH method using i Recovery is available)”
What about that? I didn't succeed to access anything with iRecovery but maybe I'm doing something wrong...

With and without the cord, but yes... Again, again, and again...

What surprises me most is that I did not do nything but install an app, can it be the reason of that ?

Out of curiosity, what app did you install before everything broke?

I think with the iRecovery method on 3.x, you'll have to write a payload to drop a ramdisk somewhere in the iPhone's storage (I think the default address is 0xbf00000000 but I don't know if that will work for 3.x) and then boot it.

Then again, since I've never tried nor heard of anyone trying an emergency ramdisk on 3.x, I can't say for certain...

Though the phone is turning itself off after a period of time, you're sure you don't have an (albeit very short) access window with SSH into the phone? Usually when the logo just hangs there for a long time that's not an option, but when it just reboots on itself, there's typically a window.

Usually, I use Transmit to SSH, but now, as far I'm trying to connect when the screen is on, I can't access anything.
Maybe there's an easier way to see if SSH is activated?
But... The Genius bar guy removed my SIM, so is the phone still try to connect WIFI (then I can SSH into it)?

App Store? Shouldn't screw a phone over this badly...

    Well... Should I try?
I would STRONGLY advise you NOT TO TRY. It's a very complicated procedure on 4.x, and it's much easier there because the payload and the delivery of the tools are already written. 3.x, you'd be completely on your own. I couldn't help you much at all, and I only know of a few people who could (and they're mostly on the Chronic Dev or iPhone Dev teams).

The phone should still be trying to connect to Wi-Fi (assuming you had the phone set to automatically connect to your network) and start the SSH service.

So you've been to the Genius Bar, and they wouldn't give you a new phone replacement? Or did they ask to restore it (which you may have to do)?

Yes, that's why I'm a bit confuse. But maybe I reach a limit of installed apps.

    Hum. Let's forget about that...

Yes, I already succeed to solve a non-booting problem thanks to this. But it was stuck on Apple logo. Here, it switchs off.

So you've been to the Genius Bar, and they wouldn't give you a new phone replacement? Or did they ask to restore it (which you may have to do)?
    He asks to restore.
And I know I have to (and I probably will), but if I can access one last time to couple of files inside...

I just irritating me that I can't read a hard disk just because the OS on it can't start up. We are far away from the marvelous Firewire Target mode...

    ---------------------------

    Wow...

I finally decide to restore, but using CaniHazRecover (wich just create a custom firmware with datas from iPhone).

So I'm now with a customed 3.1.2 ipsw, but when I select it with iTunes (10.2.1), it says: “Unknown error (1600), etc.”. I solve this first error by turning the iPhone into Recovery Mode, but now the error number is “17“...
It says the same with the customed 3.1.2 I make with PwnageTool, long time ago...

Can I just jailbreak again this way? Have I to jailbreak with a 4.x.x firmware (I don't want to)?

    --------------------

Ok, I restored. I have a lot of work, and... I did something wrong.

First Cydia open, crash. And accidentaly, I deleted all the files in private/etc/apt/sources.list.d
And I ain't got no sources in Cydia. All my installed packages appears in red. What can I do ? (heeelp...)

    Start adding sources back.

    apt.saurik.com
    apt.modmyi.com
    apt.thebigboss.org/repofiles/cydia
    repo666.ultrasn0w.org
    cydia.zodttd.com/repo/cydia

That's the default list if I remember correctly... what version of Cydia are you on? If you're not on 1.1.1, upgrade to it (may need to add apt.saurik.com first) and that should also help sort stuff out.

    Manually, doesn't work.
I found the files I deleted and put them in the directory again (bigboss.list, cydia.list, modmyi.com.list, saurik.list, yellowsn0w.com.list, zodttd.list), but it change nothing.
I've 1.0.3032-64 and a .deb of 1.0.3044 that I can't succeed to install via AutoInstall...

    I'm such a dummy.

    -----------------------

I added the hakulo source manually (first in the sources.list - all of the one you listed are not recognized as Cydia source), but same problem : stuck on Reloading Datas and crash.
What the hell is happenning ?

    -----------------------

Ok, I restored AGAIN (I'm absolutely done), but this time I deleted nothing : I haven't got any source in Cydia, even if I used the same ipsw I used for the previous jailbreak.

    What does it mean ?

    1) Don't talk about piracy sources here. Can't help you with those.

    2) Try Cydia 1.1.1 (most current version). Download the .deb from here and drop it into /var/root/Media/Cydia/AutoInstall (adding directories if need be).

    3) You could always restore to a stock 3.1.2 and jailbreak that with redsn0w, blackra1n, Spirit, or http://www.jailbreakme.com/_/iPhone1,x_3.1.2.pdf, and go from there.

I already tried to install another Cydia via AutoInstall, but it didn't work. One strange thing, I connect to SSH using Terminal and tried the apt-get command : “-sh: apt-get: command not found”...

But let's try this .deb anyway.

I jailbroke with PwnageTool 3.1.4, the one I used back, and it had worked very well. Have I to jailbreak again with another method ? PwnageTool's very good to me, but when I try to give it the original firmware I used, it says “bad firmware”. Incomprehensible.

    --------------

Ok, I went to jailbreakme.com (not the pdf direct link), and jailbroke (even if “jailbreak again may be harmful“).
Cydia still got no sources, but packages not appear in red anymore. It goes throught Reloading datas, take a long time in Loading Changes, and essentials updates. But "host unreachable", etc.
    apt-get command still not found.

    --------------

Okay ! Everything looks fine, I reinstall lot of twicks.
    Just one annoying thing:

I tried to install SpringJumps (and Activator and SMSHelper were in the queue) from Cydia, and the iPhone crashed (reboot). SMSHelper and Activator seems to be installed, but not SpringJumps.
Since, when I open Cydia, it's stuck on splashscreen and nothing happens...
What files can I remove to make Cydia fine?
EDIT: I opened Cydia in Safe Mode, everything's fine.

Thanks so much for all your help!
