Updating iPhone 4 jailbreak 4.0.1 to 4.3.2
Hi, I'm currently using a iphone 4, firmware 4.0.1 and previously jailbroken with jailbreakme.com (yeah, I'm kind of behind the times, I previously didn't have much time to research the risks of updating my jailbreak, and I needed a guaranteed untethered jailbreak)
But now as far as I can tell, iOS 4.3.2 is now untethered-jailbreakable.
My question:
Is there anything I need to know about updating my current 4.0.1 jailbreak to an untethered 4.3.2 jailbreak? (risks, alternative procedures for updating vs jailbreaking from scratch, etc.?)
Also, as of this moment (May 4) is it still necessary to be saving my SHSH via Apple instead of Cydia? Third, are there any recommendations regarding which jailbreak to use (redsn0w vs sn0wbreeze, etc.)?
Thanks in advance!

First you should save your SHSH with tiny umbrella if you havent already since Apple released 4.3.3 today.

I've already done that (although my iTunes still says the latest software available is version 4.3.2?). Do I still "Set Hosts to Cydia" in TU?

No no need to edit your hosts, you can shift/option restore/update to 4.3.2 still I believe. If you ever plan on unlocking your phone you should use a custom firmware though.

What do you mean by unlocking? Do you mean activation? I'm already on a proper AT&T contract, although I guess I might want to use my phone abroad soon - in that case what course of action do you recommend?

I am guessing you have a modem firmware/baseband of 1.59.00. That is the only unlockable baseband for iPhone 4 so you may want to hold onto that just in case you ever want to put a different sim card in.
Use pwnage tool or snowbreeze to make a custom 4.3.2 firmware and restore to that custom firmware in itunes. Make sure you choose to not activate the custom firmware since you have a ATT sim card to activate with.
You will see a signal bar issue on 4.3.2 if you do this because you preserved your baseband. To fix this just install ultrasnow from cydia.

Yep, my Modem Firmware is 01.59.00. What do you mean by "hold onto that" - just to make sure I don't update a newer baseband over that?
Thanks for all this help!

Ya, that baseband is like gold right now because it can be unlocked. So whether you want to use a sim abroad or just want to unlock for resale value down the road it makes sense to preserve that baseband if you can.

Oh, is there no way to revert if one happens to update it?

Oof, one drawback I didn't realize was that the jailbreak reset Cydia to scratch, so I lost all my Cydia apps/tweaks/themes :'(
This will certainly take a while to recover from, but at least I have everything in working order on 4.3.2 now. Thanks!
Also, once untethered 4.3.3 is confirmed, will an upgrade to 4.3.3 reset Cydia again like this?

^Yep. You can use something like pgkbackup or something similar in cydia.

Ya, every update/restore will wipe jailbreak stuff.

I have the SAME issues, and would appreciate some clarification.
1. i just ran Tiny Umbrella, and save SHSH. although it shows up as 4.3.1 as latest saved?
2. am i supposed to create a custom firmware using sn0wbreeze?
3. does sn0breeze also jailbreak, or do you use redsn0w?
4. jailbreakme was so simple, and I am just a little confused with some of the details of exactly how to do this jailbreak and unlock. I am also currently with AT&T, and have same BB 01.59.00, and want to preserve this for when I travel overseas.
thank you for helping.

Tiny umbrella should save your 4.3.2 SHSH as well. Make sure you are using the latest tiny umbrella.
Yes snowbreeze creates the custom firmware
Yes snowbreeze does the jailbreak
Snowbreeze custom firmware will preserve your baseband.

Dear Simon, thank you so much for your quick reply. a few more questions:
1. since I am restoring to a custom firmware, is it still important to save the 4.3.2 SHSH. FYI, I have run the latest tiny umbrella, and it still says the most recent SHSH is 4.3.1 ?
2. after doing the restore to the custom FW, should I restore from a back up, or set up as new. I have been also using PKGbackup, so do I do a complete or partial restore from itunes, PKGBackup, or neither.
3. after all that is done, I assume I will have to modify all my settings and tweaks as had before, and will I also have to add my previous sources to Cydia?
4. will I need to intall ultrasn0w again, to do the unlock, and fix the issue I have read about.

Yes, you will need 4.3.2 SHSH if you want to restore to that custom firmware.
You can restore from a backup if you want.
Pkgbackup should bring back all your cydia stuff.
Ya, you will need to install ultrasnow to fix the signal bar issue.
PM me your ecid (tiny umbrella will show you that) and I'll see if I can save your 4.3.2 SHSH or not.
Apple is still signing 4.3.2 SHSH so you can go ahead with the custom firmware restore. To save your 4.3.2 SHSh open tiny umbrella, click on advanced and deselect the box that says "request SHSHfrom cydia" then close tiny umbrella. Then reopen it and press save SHSH.Last edited by Simon; 05-05-2011 at 05:19 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost
