Upgrading My 3GS
Let me start with apologizing, I know that everything I am about to ask I could find if I searched this site thoroughly. I am in a pretty tight time crunch and am hoping for some straight forward answers. I have an iPhone 3gs (yes one of those ancient phones) and it currently has OS 4.0(8A293) jailbroken via Jailbreakme.com. It has worked wonderfully until recently my screen has been in and out on reacting to touch. I will have to lock the screen and unlock it again and it will work for a little while (as short as 5 seconds to as long as 10 minutes) before I have to do it again. Its a pain in the ***** to say the least. It has clearly been a long time since I've done anything to the phone OS. What I want to know is how to upgrade to the latest available OS while remaining untethered. How to go about keeping all of my jailbroken goodies without redoing them one by one (3g unrestrictor, iprotect, ifile, mywi, as well as my vast collection of apps via ftp) and I would also like to if at all possible keep things like my SMS message history, Pictures and such. Please tell me what is possible and HOW TO DO IT. Step by step is much appreciated. Like I said, I know i'm asking a lot and could figure it all out if I had the time, but my options are fix this phone in the next 24 hours, live with it, or buy a new phone (likely an android until apple releases the new iPhone).
Thanks a ton and I really appreciate any help I can get from the users here.

Let's see:
PwnageTool will let you make a 4.3.2 IPSW (the current highest untethered firmware) that's pre-jailbroken and will keep your baseband at 05.13.04.
PkgBackup in Cydia will let you backup your installed packages (supposedly--haven't tried it myself).
An iTunes device backup will handle all the iTunes App Store apps, music, SMS, contacts, etc. Restore to this backup after flashing the new custom firmware to your phone.
However, before we begin the restore process: the whole "touch is wonky" thing is bugging me. When you remove the phone from the Otterbox (so it's finger-to-screen directly), are you still having these intermittent touch registration issues? If you are, you likely have a hardware issue that an update of firmware (likely) won't fix.

Yeah, I've taken it out of the Otterbox and still experienced the same thing
. I feared it was hardware because of that but didn't want to deal with Apple if I didn't have to
. If I warranty exchange it out, Apple will give me a refurb that is likely on the latest OS. Can I jailbreak that phone using the steps above? If I remember right pwnagetool needs my old shsh or something and since it will be a different physical phone and such
. BTW thanks for your response.

PwnageTool can jailbreak one-off the very latest firmware (4.3.2) and will be updated very soon to tackle the newest (4.3.3), but a cell unlock if you need it would be uglier (but still possible).
You'll only be able to snag the latest SHSH blobs for your phone, but considering that 4.3.3 (the latest) is essentially jailbreakable, you'll be fine (except for the baseband--you'll have to go to the iPad baseband to get an unlock).
