another 3gs with 3.1.3 post
Alright, I will try to keep this short. I have been up all night researching the in's and out's of this 3gs jailbreaking. I am still left with questions. I got an iPhone from a friend, never had anything done to it, very original form. Anyways, the stats are as follows...
3GS 3.1.3(7E18)
ATT
model: MC136LL
new-rom
modem: 05.12.01
It looked as though Spirit was my only option, but I was reading that it can be limited as compared to the others when upgrading later on, due to the type of exploit.
Do I have any option at this point? ATT is my provider now, so unlocking isn't a necessity, although I wouldn't mind the option. Can I upgrade to 4+ and then jailbreak? Some uses complained of sluggishness with the ios4. Please let me know, I'm sooo tired and am dying for a JB 3GS. Thanks all!

You can jailbreak at 3.1.3 with the phone itself at www.jailbreakme.com or get sn0wbreeze (windows) or pwnagetool (mac) and make a custom firmware for 4.3.2 to preserve the baseband and jailbreak

3gs is made to handle IOS 4.xx, so you need not worry about sluggishnes. If I were you I would go for 4.3.2 and you will love it.
If you don't want to preserve bb, then it is easy : Update itunes, restore to 4.3.2 and jailbreak it with Redsn0w RC14.

Good info everyone, thanks greatly!
I'm off to search again. I am interested in protecting my baseband(s) mainly for the sake for an optional carrier down the road or for future resale. However for my purposes I will be sticking with AT&T for mobile and Wi-Fi around the home.
I shall return
