i think i got it and i reckon i may be in business. I've restored the 3.1.2 firmware, I've activated the phone, it's restored a backup i had and is in the process of syncing shtuff and inshtalling the apps i had on it. Once that's done I'll use redsn0w to unlock it and then swap the old US SIM for my new UK one and I should be good to go and forever indebted to you Question though, you wrote "jb with redsn0w" - do i have to jailbreak it before I unlock it? Will redsn0w make it kind of an obvious process? Should I go read about it some more?
[EDIT] Redsn0w just went through it's process, but i never saw any unlocking options. I see Cydia now though so should I find an unlocker through there now?

Cheers iYeow, I've installed Ultrasn0w but on the reboot it seems to be stuck, with that spinning clockface-like icon in the middle of a black background. I'll wait it out for 5 or 10 minutes and then do a hard reset if it's still the same. All these little errors in the process is scaring me that the phone may have an actual hardware problem...
Got it working with the new SIM so it must be unlocked!! A thousand thanks to you and Annie - you've really, really helped. I would've been boned without you!! Aw, you [blushing]. You're gorgeous! Just say the word (p.m. me for my email or just reply to this forum post) if you ever want the full rez of a pic i have, they should be big enough to print out at a decent size too. I don't have Flickr set to allow peeps to grab the original sizes themselves, in case they take it and sell that sheet as their own. I don't mind peeps having it, just not to make money from. Benevolent piracy is fine, yarrgh! Again Annie, thanks for taking so much time to help me and walk me thru the reanimation procedure. And props to iYeow too, that last step was very important! And obviously many thanks to the peeps that actually wrote the unlocking/jailbreak software, in case you guys know some of them. I feel they are often unsung heroes and I'd be SooL and very much out of pocket without everyone involved. Ok, I'm starting to feel like a rambling Oscar winner here so I'll just exit stage left.
