I am unlocked/jailbroke.... now what?

I have an unlocked/jailbroke 3gs running ver 4.1 modem firmware is at 6.15.00.
It has never been backed up or restored, I have no shsh etc.
I am pretty lost in that area, can someone explain what steps need to be taken in order
to backup.

Use tiny umbrella to save your SHSH. Use iTunes to backup.

So tiny umbrella will manage/save your backups, and in itunes you would point to the file tiny umbrella makes to restore to.

I have to fess up, I have avoided using itunes cause I am concerned of doing something irreversable to the phone.
Is there anything that one should avoid doing when having the phone hooked up to itunes?

All tiny umbrella does is save your SHSH. It doesnt back up your phone. SHSH are required when restoring to firmwares Apple is not allowing you to restore to anymore.

iTunes does a backup of your phone everytime you sync. It will backup everything non-jailbreak related.

Stay away from updating or restoring your iPhone in iTunes and you will be fine.
