Default when plugged into itunes keeps on saying it needs to restore

my friends iphone 3gs on 4.0.1,

JB & unlocked on t-mobile, has never been able to sync with itunes.

it will connect to computer (windows) and the iphone connected (windows explorer) pops up

but when open on itunes, it pops to the screen where it says something something and it must Restore...cant sync or anything until restore...

anyone know what the issue is? I opened Cydia for the first time for him (had it for 3 yrs w/o ever playing with cydia) to save his shsh or what not

i tried jailbrea< me dot com to reJB but still the same, Itunes wants it to restore

yes, the phone works, he is just tired of not being able to sync to computer. Not in dfu or turned off, it is on when plugged in and message prompts. He is considering upgrading to 4.1 or something to get it to work, but there is an app that he would lose that is no longer 'fully' available

Not sure what your problem is but you can update itunes to the latest first.
If you don't need unlock , then download 4.3.2 firmware from google search iclarified firmware.
Run itunes : shift + restore to 4.3.2 and jailbreak it with Redsn0w RC14
