Default Is it too late to unlock?

3gs, 4.3.1 JB with redsn0w; 5.16.02 baseband currently. Suppose I want to unlock. Can I simply Restore back to 4.3.1 ipsw and JB again, but with sn0wbreeze? Or is my baseband forever staying at 5.16.02? If I am able to upgrade to 4.3.2 and JB with sn0wbreeze (once the untethered version comes out), will this work for an unlock?

I was doing some reading about upgrading the baseband to 6.xx.xx (iPad baseband), but I didn't understand the procedure nor the following procedure to JB. Anyone care to comments? Thanks.

Baseband can only go up but not down. So you cannot unlock it at your current baseband.
You have to go with ipad baseband to unlock but you may have to sacrifice the GPS functionality.
You can use Redsn0w RC 6 to update your baseband to ipad baseband.
    OR
If you want to wait and for the Dev Team to come out with an updated Ultrasn0w to include the 5.16.02 baseband.

If they have the old bootrom, could they downgrade the baseband with fuzzyband? I'm not 100% sure on this, whether they can downgrade or if fuzzyband supports downgrading that baseband.

If the bootloader is 5.8 and only a small number of 3g not 3gs iphone has this version. Then you can use fuzzyband to downgrade the baseband. No 3gs has the bootloader of 5.8, therefore, currently it is not possible to downgrade any baseband that has been updated.
