Confused!?

Hi All
I have a 3GS which is running on 4.0.1. It is jailbroken and unlocked to any network.
Could some kind soul tell me if I can upgrade the iOS any further whilst keeping the unlock or am I stuck to this version if I need it unlocked.

U Can use sn0wbreeze and it will preserve your baseband. Then you Can unlock from there

Thanks for the quick reply, I wondered whether I could use that (version 2.5.1 I think) to put 4.3.1 on but once done I'm unsure how to unlock again???

yes, you would use 2.5.1 for 4.3.1 but unless you have SHSH for 4.3.1, Apple won't let you install it. You can use sn0wbreeze 2.6 for 4.3.2 and get the same results.

Even more confused now, I recently bought an iphone4 for the wife which was running 4.3.2 and wasn't jailbroken. I've no idea about SHSH's but I just went ahead and ran snowbreeze 2.5.1 and when it finished it I had 4.3.1 installed and was jailbroken?? I couldn't unlock it of course. So if I did the same thing to the 3GS I have, and it installed 4.3.1, how would I then unlock it for any carrier??? Thanks

For a 3gs u need the ipad baseband which breaks gps

if it is factory unlocked, it would not matter what modem baseband you have. Are you sure it is truly unlocked?

did you buy the iphone 4 new or used?

Just to recap...

My 3GS is currently running 4.0.1 and is unlocked using ultrasnow but for the life of me I cant remember how I unlocked it using ultrasnow as I cant find it anywhere to run!?!?! It is not factory unlocked and I cant remember which carrier it is with (I am old)!

The baseband it is on is 05.13.04.

I am about to sell the phone and I need to know if I can update the iOS without losing the unlock, otherwise I'll sell it as it is. I think that's a bit clearer.

Just delete all music contacts pictures apps mail sms messages and other personal info. You might wanna remove the location thing apple tracks too

use snowbreeze to create a custom ipsw and upgrade it using the custom ipsw.
Ultrasn0w is not something you run afterwards, it does the unlock when you install it.

I can use snowbreeze to create a custom ipsw for 4.3.1, which I have done for the wife's iphone, but if I do this and install it on the 3GS will I lose my ultrasnow unlock??

You will have to reinstall ultrasn0w but you do not lose the unlockable baseband. That is the key thing.

So it would be safe to upgrade using modified ipsw, then re download and install ultrasnow, end result being preserved basebandthat is unlocked to all carriers and updated ios?

Is there a particular version of ultranow that is needed?

Yes, you will preserve your baseband using snowbreeze.
If you go with Expert mode, you will also jailbreak as well, saving you from doing it later on.
Only the latest Ultrasn0w will install, you don't have options on versions to install.
You may need ultrasn0w fixer for 4.3.2 as well.

I went ahead (what the hell, I thought!) and I've managed to update to 4.3.2 using snowbreeze 2.6 and unlock using ultrasnow 1.2.2
