used 3G with 6.15 baseband; downgrade?
New to the forums here. And new to iPhones.
I bought an used iPhone 3G on eBay. The listing lead me to believe that it was still locked with factory firmware.
Well, it wasn't because Cydia was there, and I later guessed and then confirmed that it had 6.15 baseband.
Needless to say, I bricked it trying to restore to factory firmware not knowing that the 6.15 baseband update would kill it.
Is the sole advantage of 6.15 baseband so that I can unlock the phone?Last edited by ieee488; 04-20-2011 at 09:16 AM.

It is the only advantage..... the disadvantage is you loose your GPS functionallity, your only option now is to restore to a custom firmware with pwnagetool on mac or snowbreeze on a pc..... that will get you up and running again! Currently no way to restore your bb back to a lower version although the Dev team are working on that particular solution.....
Hope this helps!!!

How do I know that my current phone is unlocked?
I have a feeling the previous owner jailbroke the phone using a method which updated the baseband to 6.15 but but didn't unlock it.
How do I know which custom firmware will give me back the GPS?
And, how would I know that the GPS is restored?
As I said, I am totally new to this.Last edited by ieee488; 04-20-2011 at 12:17 PM.

no custom firmware will give you the GPS back, as there is no way to downgrade to another baseband. The only reason you need a custom firmware is because of that baseband, and that only a custom firmware will install because of it.
If you can still access the phone, look in cydia -> Manage -> packages, and see if ultrasn0w is listed. That is the unlocking program.

I managed to unbrick it by viewing a video by EverythingApplePro on Youtube.
ultrasn0w isn't in Cydia.
I think the previous owner did a brand new install of the custom firmware which has just the basics.
